Careful what you wish for

Post by Stillburning »

So I asked where I could find bullets at Berrow, today I couldnt escape them!

I was on the beach between the posts where the cars park. The only place I didnt find them was right up the beach but I wasnt finding anything else up there but trash so went back further down. On the AT Pro the bullets give a signal anything from low 50's to high 70's (low 80's with the .50cal) so have to dig them.

The fishing weights and coins gave some variety, dont know if the other one is a musket ball or canister shot (someone mentioned there was a lot of this below Berrow church). At least its easy digging in the sand. ::g

Can't say for sure from the photo but the round ball is probably a shrapnel ball http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrapnel_shell I get about 50% shrapnel to musket balls. Once you get a few you can tell the difference quite easy. The texture of the surface smoother normally darker in colour. Musket balls are normally more crudely made and still have a mold lines on them.

Your two .50 cal look to have two grooves on them in which case they are illegal to own and have to be handed in at the police station. (search on here the is a recent thread)

A couple of the .300/.303s look to have a rounded tip these are the older style

Thanks Danzigman, I'm sure the guys that detect there regularly have good idea where the rings are!

You cant tell from my photo but there is no hole drilled through so dont think it is a fishing weight. You wouldnt have much luck float fishing there anyway, the tide goes out 3/4 mile and you would probably have to cast out 200m to get into 1m of water!

Thanks Koala, I've found quite a few musket balls (inland) and that one is much smoother and darker so I think you are right about the shrapnel ball. ::g

I've seen that thread about the incendiary rounds, will hand in next time I'm in town (all the local cop shops round here have been closed) ;;z
