Just looking at Maplins as I know somebody wanting a Xterra 705 and noticed the detectors are under a weekend wonders heading.

Anybody know if this is a permanent price drop or more of a special offer like what Craig is doing :-/ :-/

Makes you wonder what the true cost of the Minelab CTX3030 really is, bet the manufacturers hold a lot back over 50% I bet. I guess it's down to how much the retailers get for selling them. I worked in sales for many years and yes retailers get the them slightly cheaper, they got to make some money.

However for me, when I was selling, it was down to numbers and how quick I could sell units. If I could guarantee the manufacturers I would clear a larger volume of units than normal, the bigger bonus I would get from them, and part of that bonus I could use to reduce unit price. Although if I missed my target, I could make a loss.

Some times the discounts comes directly from the manufacturers, where they tell the retailers how much they can do them for.

Be interesting to know how places like Crawfords do it and how much influence they have on unit prices.

Hopefully it will stay discounted as I would like one one day, when I can justify buying one. ::g

Would be very interesting to know what the cost of machines actually is,and the mark up involved;more so the production costs and manufacturers mark up as well as the retailers.
Obviously metal detectors are a niche product so never going to be really mass produced [millions],however I expect some of the mark ups would shock people.

At £1500 squids there must be a profit in it still, also to be fair to the retailers there's £250 ish in Vat on that ;Mr Osbourne certainly seems to be the main winner!

Just called the customer care number on the website and the lady I spoke to said from what she could see at their end it was a weekend offer due to finish on the 16th.

She said it appeared then that the prices were to go back to what they were before.

So if this is correct it appears to be for a limited time and not a permanent drop.

Still, bargains to be had for the weekend if anybody is wanting one ::g :D

I can see a huge rise in CTX3030 topics on the horizon ... good luck to anyone buying the machine at the much lower cost, but we will still have people posting on MONDAY (after the weekend) that they are upset at not being able to buy at the lower cost, so I hope everyone remembers that the offer seems to be for the WEEKEND only. I suppose Maplins may accept a deposit against the low prices ..
Nice to see top end machines discounted so much, the Deus must be next? Liam ::g :;@

Just rang JA and the manager is not there till Monday to negotiate with. I take that back, Joan Allen just phoned back and I bought one

To quote Whatunearth regarding when manufacturers tell retailers what price to sell..generally that's called price fixing and illegal. A lot of retail goods come with rrp but it's up to the retailer to decide what they want to price at. As for mark up to knock £400 quid off a 2k item there must be loads in it considering, vat etc. Not unless there's a dealership offer where you buy 10 and get 1 free so they use the free one to discount the others. If you look at it though and want the large coil too the offer at JA isn't far away..not unless they MATCH the Maplin price for the standard pack AND still offer the "free" coil..that then makes the Etrac obsolete price wise.

The price with JA does not include the large coil, but I will be using it mainly in the water in Spain so do not really want the large coil. I almost bought a couple on an auction site for £1500 so glad I didn't.

Well I bought one today, and now got iut together, it looks like I have a faulty one, turn on all I get is the minelab logo on the screen, it does not go any further. So it seems like a trip back to maplins tomorrow. Or does anyone know why it should only load to start up screen.

Hi guys, being in retail myself I know it can work like this.
RRP -40% (so CTX £1139 let's say)
The manufactures can stop big discounting if they want to. Authorised dealers can get the rights to buy/sell taken away if they discount too heavily unless agreed with the manufacture first. A radiator company I know, got rid of 300+ accounts for selling the items cheap online.
I'm not interested in how much it costs them to make, I just want a product that's value for money and like the fact there are a few 'dream' machines out there. Take that away and it all becomes rather boring.

I am informed that Minelab has apparently decided to sell direct to Maplins and bypass Joan Allen. No doubt this will drive the prices down but not sure what the after sales service will be like. For those who regard the buying price as everything then ok but with that high investment for a machine I would want to sleep easy over any future hiccups, whether I have somewhere to discuss problems and with people who understand detecting, Liam :;@

Probably come with a warranty card with Regtons
Hi Morley, as far as I know Regtons have never sold Minelabs, not for a good few years.
