First time on the beach

Post by PaulL »

Today I had a couple of hours on the local beach , my first choice was heaving with wind surfers dog walkers etc so went with option 2 . Being new to detecting it was my first time on the beach and with a new machine also . With the xterra in beach mode , ground balanced etc away I go . I stayed on the damp sand but the xterra was falsing , tried turning the sensitivity down but just couldn't get happy with the set up
A little more research I think ! . I ended up turning the beach mode off and continued my search in my normal mode all metal and the sensitivity was happy at 23 , felt more confident with this set up and managed 4 pence , a pound of fishing lead , a brass hinge and couple of .303 cases . Very windy but a lovely day nevertheless , just need to sort out my beach mode .

It's just a matter of time until you become familiar with the nuances. All Minelab detectors are said to be very good on the wet beach and there is a good plentiful amount of users on this forum so you should be able to obtain a few words of wisdom from them.
Good Luck ::g

Well done, just remember not to expect too much straight away, takes a while to learn a beach and the way to set up your equipment. Enjoy the experience and don't put too much pressure on yourself to find the yellow stuff.
I tend to do the low tide marks then switch to a bit of dry sanding to mix things up, keep it a fun experience, good hunting ::g

i dont do much beach detecting, the xterra is not very good on wet sand, i found the same thing as other people its worse on beach mode than normal mode.if i was doing a lot of beach detecting i would get a minelab fbs or bbs machine to add to my arsenal.My cscope newforce r1 handles the wet sand a little better.

ignore other beach users, you have as much right to be there as anyone else but in the summer just dont detect among the sun worshipers as thats just a bit creepy x;

Sounds like a good start Paul; the machine has got you thinking! Keep at it and your finds will improve as you progress. I use a EuroAce on the beach and it hates the wet stuff. I also have a C-Scope CS4PI and it works fine on wet sand but the darned thing can't tell the difference between a gold ring and a steel washer! :-SS

Good luck and happy hunting. ::g
