SEF 10" x 12" First Impressions - Field Test

Post by Dave8472 »

Hi all, been following all the SEF Threads, and decided to go for a second hand one just in case I could not get on it with, got a great deal of ebay for just under £100 delivered. Got it fitted on my Explorer SE no problems, a work of art getting the curly lead up through the stems !

It took me ages to make up my mind what size to go for, the 10” x 12” or 12” x 15” ? Decided on the smaller of the two, on first trip out I was glad I went for the smaller one, the extra weight was quite apparent, will have to do some work on that right arm lol !

Deliberately went to a part of my site that I have gone over several times before, apart from a tiny corner next to it, I couldn’t believe my luck in the small corner five good signals one after another all were those ring holes you get in a bit of tarpaulin. Next signal Ooo popped in to the silver section on my display, 4 inches down a 1946 Silver Sixpence, well happy with that, also pin-pointing was the same as the factory coil, bang in the middle. Other finds where 1797 Cartwheel Penny, my first, well worn though, 1912, 1920 Penny’s, 1939 Farthing, and some usual George VI. Dug a few Ring Pull zones and got my first Florin, albeit a 1966 Cupro one.

To sum up, and I have tried not to have rose tinted glasses on but I can say the coil defiantly preformed better than the factory fitted DD coil, sensitivity seemed more stable, ie when you go from short grass in to long grass, normally get some false reading there, iron falsing also seemed a little better.

Obviously this was only my first outing with the new coil (2 Hours), so will post any significant updates with any further information,

good to know that they really do perform, I bought a new8x6 a when I bought the safari but have never really used it as I have been doing ploughed and short stubble, I had wondered about getting one of the larger ones and am slowly getting towards flashing the cash for the 10x12 which seems to be the most usefull in the range, just needed convincing that they really are better than the coil that comes with the safari.....Mark

Glad to hear that the sef 10x12 seems to do the job as ive just bought one but not recieved it yet.
My explorer 2 is running on the stock 10" coil, which as said falses especially on wet sand.
I bought the sef from bulgaria via ebay, seeing as its a lot cheaper than joan allens etc.The good thing is that this is all the seller sells, and has recieved excellent feedback. He also mailed me to say it was posted and sent a pic of my package with my name and address on lol, seems like a conciencous guy,so hopefully ill have no problems with postage or handling.
Really looking forward to getting the coil fitted and having a few hours out with it,glad the pinpointing seems good,i was aware that it is where the sef sticker is,but no doubt ill soon find out.

Only thing was is that i couldnt decide on sef or the pro-coil so i hope ive made the right choice

Hi Yellow, I don't think you will be disappointed with the coil, I did see that seller on eBay and his feedback was very good, I was going to get one from him if I could not get a cheap enough second hand one,
