Amen .. It's akin to driving a car without a speedometer .. It's perfectly possible and you know roughly how fast by the feeling, sounds and scenery you're going but without a speedo you can't be 100% sure lolChilgrove wrote:I am envious of those who can tell simply by the audio signal if a target is worth digging or not. I use my vdi all the time as I've found the more the numbers jump around, the less likely I have a good target. I guess that is not infallible, however. But as I've mentioned before, I have dug a nice hammered silver coin where the audio signal was poor. I only dug it when I saw the display showing 54. But scratchy sounding audio. I am curious to know if those who swear by going by audio alone would have known to dig that particular signal. We'll never know!
Howard.
I've also had really dodgy scratchy signals in the low 40's that turned out to be hammered next to the same dodgy scratchy signal that showed high 20's that turned out to be coke
Personally, I believe you can't go by numbers OR sounds alone and that by combining the two you get the best of both worlds and a much better mental image of what lies beneath
