Hi,
I've had my Deus for about four months now and have been getting out locally for about 2 to 3 hrs per week. I've been focusing on a footpath in a riverside area that is shown on tithe maps dating back to the early 1800's. I can't trace its history before that but would suggest it's considerably older than that. Its doesn't appear to have ever been ploughed but is sometimes used for grazing.I'm averaging about 4 or 5 coins per outing, mainly hitting on pre decimal copper with the odd silver dating back as far as the mid 1800's. I've also found the odd bit of 20th Century jewellery. Given the number of coins recovered I'd suggest it hasn't been detected much in the past.
My question is as follows.....Why am I not finding anything pre 1850? is it not there to be found or has it simply sunk out of range? (Soil structure is approx 12 inches of soil on a sand base). Alternatively am I using the wrong programs or settings? So far I've used 1 and 2 (fast and GMP). Do I need to change the frequency to hit on deeper items?
Any advice gratefully appreciated! I've still got a lot to learn about this interesting machine!!
Thanks in advance!
Deus advice please

Hi,
You've answered the question yourself, it's either not there or it is out of detection range.
Large pre-decimal should be detected at 8 - 12 inches on most settings especially on pasture which isn't contaminated with ferrous and is low on the mineralisation count.

If you don't hear it..... it's not there!
I agree with fisher .. You either haven't walked over anything earlier or they are out of range
If this wasn't the case then nobody with a deus would find anything older and, well, that's just not the case!
Don't overthink it too much .. Put it another way .. Youve been out for approximately 40 hours with your deus .. That's not a lot of detecting time really
You'll pop a hammy or older pre-decimal before you know it

Thanks for the answers so far. Guess I will keep trying! Think my concern was that I wasn't using the machine properly and therefore missing some stuff. Maybe I need to pay more attention to the iffy and weaker signals!?!
Malkins,
A lot of the smaller deeper targets will produce a much quieter signal at default settings. I turn "audio response" up 1 which, for me, makes those fainter signals more obvious.

Have you got any hammereds you can dig a test bed with .. If not you can buy scruffy hammies on a certain well know auction site for a few quid and test and tweak your settings until you're confident you've got the machine set up correctly for those conditions at least
Also, dig the top off those weaker signals .. If they don't improve then move on
