Gold sovereign signal?
Gold sovereign signal?
A couple of weekends ago I was searching an area where allegedly gold sovereigns had been found many years ago. Needless to say I did not find any but out of curiosity does anyone know roughly what sort of VDI number we would expect on the control unit for such a coin?

They were most likely half sovereigns that were found in the past so you would want the v.d.i of both, half and full.Being high carat gold they should give a good signal if laying flat and at reasonable depth. But in reality you want to be digging all signals, good luck with it

Thanks for the replies. The trouble I had with that particular permission is that it is full of ring pulls. It should have been a very good area with loads of history including a royal castle. Ah well maybe next time.

if gold coins have been found before go low and slow digging everything gold is heavy so may sink deep in soil so every sound you machine makes needs digging out dont go by readings go by sounds

Full sovs read the same as 0.500 silver threepences (1921-1944), half sovs read the same as current 20p's. If that helps. Don't forget the ID number changes depending on operating frequency.

I was thinking exactly the same. I recently dug up a Viccy half sovereign which at 5 inches or so should have give a good signal and good I.D numbers. But it didn't because it was on edge. Everyone remember these I.D numbers are only reasonably accurate at relatively shallow depths in low mineralized soil when a coin is lying flat . The chances of finding a Gold coin meeting these criteria are in my opinion pretty remote. My advice is go slow and listen carefully to what sounds a target makes and dig everything until youre experienced enough to be pretty sure whats underground before you dig.lord lovell wrote:if gold coins have been found before go low and slow digging everything gold is heavy so may sink deep in soil so every sound you machine makes needs digging out dont go by readings go by sounds
