Nice finds. The largest shotgun shells produced were 4 bore, can you make out any other markings?

(The historic sizing of shotguns being the number of balls of a diameter to fit the bore, ie 12 bore, 1 ball weighs 1/12 of a pound. 4 bore 1 ball weighs 1/4 pound etc).

Hi Ocean, the shotgun shells, to me they look more like WW2 PIAT launching cartridges. Any chance your area was used for training during WW2?

Looks like you have a great site there as if it had been detected in the past those coppers would have surely been found, if that was my permission I would be looking forward to going back ::g
My sentiments exactly ::g
Some nice finds there by the way :)

Good going there fella- there's real potential there, I'd say, as said all those coins plus a couple of nice buckles ::g The spectacle buckle goes back to 1500-1650 so I'd expect there to be hammered coins, more buckles, mounts, etc from that period too. Did you find any scraps of lead?
Cheers, Ollie ::g

Hello All,
Thanks very much for the interest and comments. First of all I left all the items with the land owner so didn't really get to clean them up for a better look.

There was definitely markings on the top of the cartridges but not inscribed markings from what I could see. If you look closely on the pictures you can just make out some writing. I'm pretty sure the land I was on was not a military training area. These cartridges were all found closely grouped in one small area.

I did find scraps of lead and also detected a lot of iron hits which could be anything! I have hardly scratched the surface of the land, there is probably a minimum of 80hrs of detecting left and then some. I have an exciting area to try on my next trip, the land owner give me a bit of history of a particular area along the edge of the woods and down across the stream.
The only thing that disappointed me about the trip was my own expectations and the weather, there has to be older objects because of the history of the land which was kindly told to me by the family who have owned this land and Manor House for over 500yrs.
I guess patience is the key and more trips.
Thanks for the input from all of you, if I get anymore info I'll post it.
Ocean
