Hello all!
I've been using my Deus full, for about 2 years now, and I absolutely love it!
However, as most of us want to try and get the very best from our machines, I've been experimenting both air & ground tests with good targets next to iron.
My conclusion is that iron has the preference! Even in all metal ( 0 discrimination ) the iron sounds clear and takes over the good target! I've tried all different tones, my normal searching tone is full tones, thinking that both,, good & iron signals would come through! But not the case when the iron is within a inch or so from the good target? Iron always wins!
I guess it's just the way? We all know, that the Deus is proberbly one of the fastest detectors on the market today for its fast recovery between signals! Or am I asking too much from this wonderful machine? PS I've got both the 9" & 11" coils, of which there seems very little difference between them.
Any ideas, greatly appreciated!
Dave.
Does iron take preference over non ferrous?

I'm not sure about it taking preference but I use Deus Fast and a slow swing and I can usually hear the different tones coming through.

Could never get on with full tones as they fried my brain and was not enjoying the Deus, basically use 2 tones that gives me a basic 'yes' 'no' indicator rather than me trying to decipher the multi tones,of course that is the beauty of the Deus we can adapt it to our own requirements and likes.

Hi Dave, I did a test myself a while back- here it is..

I've found that full tones can give you the edge but only if you know what to listen for as those 'hidden' targets will normally sound terrible, as they're so near to the iron. I've done depth tests myself and found that sometimes though two tones (Deus Fast) picked up the targets that I couldn't locate with full tones! For me it's a confidence thing, I've gone back to 2 tones for my main searching as I find the targets sound much clearer, deeper targets especially. Before I was never really content with how my Deus was set up so I was often worrying about that rather than concentrating on the signals.
Cheers, Ollie

Iron does tend to dominate (relative to it's physical size) because it is magnetic (ferro-magnetic to be precise - a magnet sticks to it), and that results in it affecting the way your machine sees other targets. It's known as Iron Masking, and Tom Dankowski has written some documents on the subject:

Thanks Ollie, very interesting , been out all day today, and found the Pitch mode very good indeed at picking targets out amongst iron,,,, will keep experimenting !
