Many thanks for the suggestions ... but founf my first sceat today , and the numbers were 50-55. I am learning the tones, but feel that I would be digging too many hot rocks, if I didnt refer to the numbers.

You can notch out the hotrock sounds through the GB notch which is specifically designed for this purpose, scroll down to NOTCH GROUND FUNCTION - http://www.metaldetectingworld.com/xp_d ... ance.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I remember when I found my first Potin that the sounds were really very very "Iffy" indeed and only because I happened to glance down at the numbers reading 45-55 that I dug that hole. Im still unsure with regards to listen to the sounds not look at the numbers as so many far better Deus users than me have far more knowledge! ::g ::g

I have only been using the Deus for three months and I know a lot of people say don't go by the numbers but I found on one of my permissions that has a lot of coke it can help. The coke comes in at 25-27 every time, I dug all signals in this range for a while but every time it was coke. I have found about six hammies with the Deus in this time and all were in the high forties and above apart from one that was to deep to give any number. I would agree that the tones are the best way to judge a signal but I tend to keep an I out for the 25-27, I still dig them every now and then for peace of mind and if anything good pops up in these numbers I will have a lot of humble pie to eat.

Spiker I agree coke often (or usually) shows 25 to 27 but keep in mind coke can also show much higher numbers, eg 70 to 75 if it is a large piece or it's very wet.
I have never been able to understand how some people can recognize a good signal by sound only. I certainly can not and often find lead or coke gives a lovely two way audio signal. Maybe just my hearing not so good. I have found silver hammered coins where the audio was very iffy and only dug after seeing the number around 55.

I also every so often, dig an "obvious" coke signal just for my peace of mind and so far as I can recall I have never found anything good in the range 20 to 30. However I know others have so I guess the point here is that nothing is cast in stone.

I have found the numbers can change depending in the program. For me in the hf program hammered are usually in the 60s but changing program can change the numbers.

I have had a deus since they first came out and have always kept a eye on the numbers , I use the tones first, but surely another piece of info can only help , I find that sceats give not the clearest signal and the numbers are 40-45 ,as said Coke is mostly 25-30 and 95 plus for iron but this may depend on the programme and soil ,I am by no means a expert with the deus and I am always looking to learn and improve but for me I like to always check the numbers :D

Agree with coke if you choose not to dig it (50/50 split on that issue) but 95+ for iron ? ask any hoard finder what sort of signal with any machine & most will say it wasn't the greatest signal, in fact many nearly don't dig........95+ isn't always iron.

Not been lucky enough to find a hoard yet hope it's not because I've not been digging 95 plus signals :D but i find that if the display reads 95 plus and it's a broken tone over a large area and loud its normally iron , I probably have neglected to dig a few good targets that said you can always dig it anyway to be sure and I often do dig just to check.
