SW4 Pairing Problem

Hi all, I have just purchased WS4 phones, I was under the impression that as long as I have them charged up and switched on all I have to do is switch on the remote in range of the coil and the phones will pick this up.
Well the phones remain just showing the charge status, I have tried on 11” and 9” coils but no go.
Have I missed something?
