Eley No12 Gastight off beach

Post by Dave The Slave »

Due to change of job recently only my 3rd outing this year. Down the beach at 6.20 this morning for an hour and a half. Not many signals on the wet sand with the CS4 PI, only a 2p and about 10 items of scrap, disappointing as it was a low tide.
Best find was a fired shotgun cap, brass/ copper colour. Marked, ELEY.LONDON
No 12
GASTIGHT

Obviously I know it`s from a 12 bore. Also these are a nuisance to those of you who are plagued by them on inland sites. To me it was unusual as I have never found one down the beach although I have come across lots of the plastic sleeves. Trying to date it came across a website saying they were not made after 1945,with this stamp but surely its more modern.
Not much to report but something different for me, which is part of the hobby, you never know what you will find.
Sorry no photo available.
Cheers all ::g
Dave.

Hi Danzigman,
Thank you for using your time to identify the cartridge cap. Yes exactly the same and I would agree with the wildfowling use on your second reply.
Thanks, ::g

The "Gastight"is definitely an oldy,well done,seem to remember they were loaded with Nobels "Sporting Ballistite" smokeless gunpowder which was one of the first developed for sporting shotgun use so Eley jumped aboard with that one as they replaced the old blackpowder loads.Hope the chap firing managed to get his dinner! ;)

I am finding 12 bore shotties on Bridlington beach quite often, I just put them in my junk pouch and never thought of looking at them more closely. The fact that they are on a main holiday beach has made me think that they are obviously not modern.

I will have to look more closely at the next one I find.

That's crazy, I found my first shotgun cartridge in my garden today with exactly the same writing on it....and a 20p. Put it in the keepers box . No doubt I'll be plagued by them as the weeks/months go on? But pleased non the less

Nice thanks, I'm really suprised it was in my front garden just a few inches down. I know it's completely insignificant but I'm well pleased with it. Sorry if I hijacked the thread btw

I think with shotties the older they are the higher the brass content so they can be better preserved,the more modern ones are higher steel content as they can be seen to rust where clay shoots or game pegs have been.
