Ground Balance - Deus... your method?
Just reading around the web on ground balance on the Deus.
On my Minelab GPX in Australia, GB was critical to not digging ground noises / hotrocks, and getting best depth, so I would assume it's still important for the Deus.
Do you:
a) Stick on 90, regardless.
b) Set the GB manually to a couple of numbers above the reported mineralisation index
c) Set the GB manually to the reported mineralisation index
or
d) Something else!
Interested to hear responses.
Cheers - Rob

I stick it in tracking and forget about it...
Maybe not the best method for optimizing performance but being relatively new to the Deus it's one less thing to think about...

I dont give GB a second thought ... just press the ON button and go!
Imagine there is no heaven, only sky above us.
Tracking is ok on quite pasture if its full of iron etc then its a no no, leave on 90 or if ground balance figure goes to say 80 then manually adjust it down .

Only on the beach the GB is tricky and need special attention.. I often use tracking inland or just turn on an go..

I noticed the other day on a permission that things sounded very quiet under the coil until I noticed that the actual ground figure was around 72 to 75 and my GB was up at factory default 90. Brought it down manually to around 78 and it really livened things up, and digging lots of deeper small targets that I'm sure it'd have missed if I'd left it on 90.

I can´t remember the details, but think to remember that the manual GB should be no more than 4 higer or lower to the measured GB by the detector.. I must say, I have never tried to lower the GB, so would not be able to say if more targets come in..rob-greaves wrote:I noticed the other day on a permission that things sounded very quiet under the coil until I noticed that the actual ground figure was around 72 to 75 and my GB was up at factory default 90. Ground balance the Deus? After watching Gary's videos he recommends just leaving it on 90 in the UK, should I be doing something else with the ground balance....I switch on, select the program and go!

I think if leave it on 90 were the case, the detector would just have a country select setting in the menu, then when that was set, dispense with the GB setting completely B-)
It made a huge difference for me, bringing the GB down from 90 to closer to the reported mineralisation index (MI) number in terms of hearing the targets.
I've been on various ground with the machine, but the ground the other day (Cornwall pasture) was the lowest MI number I'd seen so far.
I know from experience with the highly mineralised ground in Australia, if you were out on your GB, you could easily miss a small Gold nugget. The method of choice there was pumping to GB. Hold button on the handle, pump until noises go away, then carry on. I'd often be GB'ing every 10yds or so.

Rob and I tend to use the "Tracking" mode but keep an eye on what the auto settings are up to.
I've had it where the GB has dropped to the low 60's and is very noisy. In this case I reset the GB by quickly going through the GB options until the "Tracking" mode is selectable again. This usually brings it back to the mid 70's to mid 80's.
Personally, I think the mid 70's are at the limit where the noise level is acceptable but this depends on what type of ground is beneath the coil at that time. As we all know, different areas of a field can be so changeable in terms of GB. I'm quite happy when the machine has settled in the mid 80's as this seems to be a good level between the very quiet to the very noisy!
I do admit that if I've ever forgot to select "Tracking" and see that the display shows 90 (the machine's default setting) and the other figure is say 74, I can't help thinking "have I missed anything?".
Thankfully this doesn't happen very often!!

This video is interesting - exploring the effects of ground balance being 'off' and its detriment on a deeper target. He also explores 4kHz.
I see this as some new things to try next time I'm out.

There is a very recent video by Gary in which he takes a different approach to ground balancing and ends up digging a 3 foot hole to retrieve the target, worth looking at.
