A couple of Deus problems / peculiarities?

Post by rob-greaves »

On a dig this past weekend on ploughed, I noticed a few strange things with my Deus 11".

1. I had about 5 signals that were in the 60's to 70's, nice bright signals. When dug out, they simply disappeared. Gone. Completely. Any thoughts? Mineralised pocket of ground broken up perhaps?

2. Falsing. I've not had this on pasture before, but running HF (Hedge Fodder) and running the coil over the ploughed, if I so much as touched a part of the ground with the coil, I'd get a fast sort-of 'br-br-br-br-br-br-br-br-br' response that decays over a second or so. I though Deus coils were all potted? Are the windings inside able to move?

Back when I was Gold detecting in Australia, I bought a Coiltek coil that did something similar, and it was returned as 'Faulty'. In fact, Nugget Finder coils were advertised as fully potted to prevent movement and no falsing, and lived up to their claim.

When detecting on pasture, I always rub my coil over the grass for maximum depth. I'm not one of these 6" above the ground swingers... although looking around at other Deus users on ploughed with coils right up in the air, do they know something about this falsing issue that I don't? :-O

Any thoughts on these issues?

Cheers - Rob

Sounds like you may have a fault, I also sweep the grass on pasture and on plough I often hit lumps of earth and stones while trying to keep the coil as low as conditions allow. I do not get falsing and the programme I use for pasture is close to the HF programme, if I got a good signal as you describe I would certainly expect to locate the target. I know all machines vary slightly but this does not sound right to me.

Regarding the falsing, have you checked under the coil cover for grit/dirt ingress ? this can sometimes cause falsing due to it interfering with the ground balance, the "ghost" signals could also be caused by this too but i've had a few of these turn up and they seem to be caused by "difficult" dirt (cokey, habitation ground).
I also use a tweaked hedge fodder program with the 11" coil.

After speaking to LP, they recommended I send it back.

It went off yesterday, so hoping for a favourable outcome in due course!

Sometimes it is simply the coin or item falling back into the hole and coming out of reach of the detector. I see that rather often and taking a spade with the loose material out and check that stack again helps then.
(As a Pinpointer will help.)

Also very small items will "disappear", if the stack of of soil on top of it is too big or if the item is now in a bad position (like a coin on edge).

Best greetings from Germany

I agree re the disappearing signals on tiny targets. If the signal disappears then take another spadeful out as then the target is turned and will offer a better signal, have had many cut halves and quarters come back to life, Liam OooO

I often have that turning out a clod. Signal disappears if it is small. Probably was quite close to the surface but then ends up "deeper" as it is covered by the clod. I usually replace or break up the clod and turn it over.

I can get sounds from the coil on HF when I knock into the plough ruts. Also on rough plough I can start to detect the eyes on my boots on my swing due to the uneven ground as I get out of sync!
