Deus vdi chart
Hi have just done a few air tests and found my small hammered coming in at around 50-60, gold coin 71, victorian half crowns 97. This is on 18khz with id normal.
Its the big silvers you have to watch but if you look at the xy graph they give a lovely straight line. Some iron as we know can come in at 97 but the tone is not as smooth and the xy graph is all over the place.
Cheers

too many variables
Slight difference in machines give slightly different numbers
Same with the coil
and how the machine is ground balanced
now take a coin
place it flat on the ground
pick up the far edge lift it up and stand the coin up
spin the coin through 90 degrees
that 3 different orientations but in the ground it could be tilted at any angle
now put a crack in the coin and you will get a completely different number
Now add something nearby like iron or coke
Shallow or deep
Damp ground Dry ground
that's just on a coin.
Other artifact can be far more complex
Imagine a Saxon sword hanger still with its iron rivets in place
Digging by numbers means you will be leaving some good stuff behind.
Never happened to me but I can see say an industrial site where a load of say thousands of aluminum sleeves have been dumped you could dig a few noting the number range then carry on digging everything else. Knowing you are going to be miss a few good targets but at least least you can detect the field

I shocked myself by pulling out 2 hammies displaying "97" using Adams "Hedge Fodder" at weekend. Audio was not certain but targets were few and far so I was digging suspect signals. Depth was shallow. 13" coil, Auto GB. I always leave large 98/99 as its Iron but this was a surprise and I'm having a rethink on strategies.
Deus II, 9" & 11", WS6 Mi-6 (upgrade path DEUS x35 9", 13" and 11", WS4, Original XP Deus 9", 11", 13", Elliptical, Fisher F75+Sunray, Minelab X-terra-50)
justb read about a hoard of 10 socketed axeheads ,two spears and a sword being found .
vdi number was zero .so time to think about the big question ,how many big lump of iron will you ignore before you ignore a silver or bronze hoard .
the guy that found it had passed on similar signals in the past ,but just thought go on why not .
so its not just 97 that can trick you .

Moral of the story is ignore the numbers and listen to the tones. I have dug loads of 00 numbers and found some really interesting stuff.

There are many good replies here and Koalas is a great explanation of the problem of deciding wether to dig or not on the vdi numbers. Really they are pretty useless. Any Deus user will have been supprised many times by what appeared in the hole from what the VDI numbers said. If it sounds clean and sweet dig it regardless and if it is a bit iffy best to dig as well . Only leave the worst sounding iron signals and who knows some of them may be that hoard in an iron pot. Good Luck.

Iam one of the old school and 90% of what I dig is what I hear, but the digital readout is a bonus.
With the Deus the Ferrous /Non Ferrous indicator is a big help.
The digits disappear at depth and its at that point when the ears come into play
If the find is deep, especially a small item all the user hears is a tiny whisper.
Place that same find on the surface and it sounds as you would expect it based on what it actually is.
Happy Hunting,
Jerry.
PS I use Gary`s SIFTER setting most of the time.

I always go by the audio on every machine, far more reliable at depth and certainly would never make a 'dig-no dig' decision solely on what the screen tells you, although i do mainly use a full Deus the control box is usually in my pocket and rarely on the stem, basically like running it in the 'Lite' configuration but if i need to fine tune the machine then i can,but as a general rule never use it.

Hi Jerry, dont plan on updating to version 4,still use version 2 as i find the audio in my opinion better than version 3.2,if it aint broke as they say dont fix it.Just my personal choice of courseJBM wrote:Hi Mega B. you will need the controller mounted if you choose to use 4.0 oscilloscope in the near future.Jerry.

A not too serious view! - Doing things by numbers is a trait of the army and was seldom very popular. It's also a system which has been adopted for teaching small children to paint pictures, (with varying degrees of success). As a feature in metal detecting, it's sometimes used as a guide but never fully relied upon.

A disservice is no service at all.
Only had my Deus a few weeks now and just my forth time out with it on the same pasture which I have been over many times over a couple of years with another machine and thought it was about done. The first three times I used the numbers on the Deus as a dig indicator mainly out of curiosity. So this time I kept the remote in my pocket and just dug by audio alone. I dug any repeatable signals no matter how iffy they were and the field just seemed to come alive again with decent finds. Most targets were quite small and deep but sounded much better after removing the top layer. There were about 50 targets including 2 coins, one a small thin silver, and about 20 buttons mostly small at about 8 inches. Many targets which I fully expected to be hot rocks (coke), were not. Ignored the iron buzz if target response was quite positive, and found either both together or just hammer/axe heads. As others here have found, Dig by audio only = greater find rate. I find that numbers just cloud judgement due to VDI being wildly inaccurate on any machine at depth. Why spend 2 minutes analysing a target in different menus when you can just dig it out in 1 minute. Hope this helps others.
.

I found a nice Edward 1st silver hammered penny with a number of 53 showing. Don't really know why I dug it as the audio signal was not good. Maybe just a gut instinct but I am glad that I did.

In my experience though anything under 35 is plop
Including pure gold plop
