Deus, hours 5 and 6

Ok so had 6 weeks off and was itching to get out. Not had much experience with the machine so went to a small permission close to home. It only takes 5 minutes on my motorbike as parking is difficult, the Deus comes into its own with its portability.

There were sheep in the next field with lambs, so I stayed away from their side so as not to stress them out, when I got too close to the fence their lookout let me know

Spent 2 hours on GMP prog and didn't adjust a thing, never even switched to Deus fast, didnt feel the need. Lots of little targets, it didnt seem to miss much, I dug a few iffys but also left a few.

Top coin is French Louis 14th Denier (1774-93). One below is a Liard, an 1830 Guernsey Double and a couple of near featureless discs. Lots of buttons and a couple of bottle stoppers maybe, lead soldier (injured!) and probably the best nick thimble I have found.

Nothing exciting but I enjoyed myself.



Enjoying the machine so far, it certainly doesn't miss little targets and really sings when you get a decent coin. Starting to learn the tones but many more hours required until I start fiddling with settings.

Out again yesterday, not had time to clean finds yet.

Spent 2 hours on pasture which I had done before, a bit more frustrating as bottle tops, foil and can bits litter the fields. I still managed coins and some bits but my inexperience with the tones probably made me dig more rubbish. Bottle tops give a lovely signal lol.

Still sticking with GMP and will clean finds later and post them up.

A nice varied selection of finds,digging trashy items like foil,tin etc are all part of metal detecting,if you start knocking out foil you will almost certainly knock out silver hammered coins as well as they can come in the same readings,so best too dig all signals.

You may have done the site once but it can still produce finds many many other times in the future,as it appears to have some modern trash on the site these can mask decent finds that are at greater depth,so once you have started cleaning all the trash out from say the top 4'' or so then you can start finding some potentially nice finds in the next layer and these are the finds that you could be missing by not digging the trashy items.

I have been doing a small field on one of my permissions for years,and its still producing finds albeit they are not as prolific as when i 1st started detecting this site but they are still coming up,it may seem like the best thing to do is turn up the discrimination so you dont dig the really modern trash that is just below the surface,but in reality its not the best option,if its still producing then keep at it and clean the trash out so that one can gain access too those 'potentially' older targets just a few inches deeper below the trash,its odds on favourite the trash is masking some better targets.This is why its always advisableto have a detector with a small coil on so that one can get in between the trash alot easier.

The smallest current coil for the Deus is the 9'' coil which in my opinion is far too large for trashy sites,although they do work reasonably well,something like a older Tesoro with a small coil on works wonder,i personally use the T2 with the 5'' coil on which is like a Laser beam hitting the decent targets in between the trash.

Of course just some possible suggestion,but its always nice to have a machine with a smaller coil for trashy sites or when the crops come off so that one can get in between the stubble rows.

I obviously cut the rubbish but there was a fair bit of foil and the lead has gone into the scrap bin apart from the seal.

Brit pennies, Jersey twelfth of a shilling, Brit half penny 1862 and another Brit below but cant make it out and a little 1941 sixpence

Something French top of next row and then buttons and modern spendables.

Am thinking the lower buckle might be something old(ish), I'll poke around on Google.

Bling worthless ring was eyes only find near the back of my van in the mud...not surprised, I would have chucked it too!

Better haul than I remembered when I got home so pretty happy today.

@Bully1970,just noticed that you also have a CS4PI as well,i would assume that you only use this solely for beach work especially on the wet sand,but that is not the only time you can/could use it.If your current site that you are detecting with the Deus does start drying up finds wise and you have taken alot of the trash/rubbish targets out then you can also take advantage of that and use the Pulse which is also deeper,that is when a VLF/Pulse machines can compliment one another.

Then the CS4PI can gain you that all important additional depth that the Deus stock coil cannot reach,always take advantage and think outside the box as sometimes its situations like that 2 machines can work in harmony to your advantage of course just using a Pulse on its own at the start would be a total nightmare,but if you clear the productive site with a VLF machine 1st of all the non desirable targets then the Pulse finishes the productive job.

Not a bad shout, I do use it only for beach.

My mate who I detect with sometimes has one too and we have chatted about using the CS4's but never bothered.

So you have given me an idea, the permission I was on yesterday is three pasture fields separated by hedges, each one about as big as a footy pitch...so not huge but it is big for Jersey!

The first one we are losing in July to development and it was pretty quiet yesterday, so maybe we need to get in there with the PI's to see what is left.

On worked out sites i have alway thought about buying a pulse just to run round sticking BBQ sticks in ground where i think something sounds interesting . then visit every peg with vlf cranked and circle the target to see if its just iron or has a sweet sound .
most deep targets will be missed in normal search ,yet quite audible when you know they are there ,bit like comparing machines in testbed ,if you compared them blindfold you would struggle to pass over target ,its easy when you know to within a inch where to sweep . let the pi put you on all the most probable spots ,its better than slow searching every inch of field from all angles again.
Question . does a pi machine suffer from being blinded by the nail direction like a DD VLF does .
i,m assuming you dont need to grid fields ,since most have conc coil .
would a cs4pi hit deep hammies cleaner than a good vlf ?
