Advice On Finding More Gold

Post by detecttheearth »

Hi all,

Last week I hit an old field that hadn't yielded a great deal in the past. It was recently rolled so I got back out there and one evening I was lucky enough to find my first gold coin. An 1864 Young Head Victoria Half Gold Sovereign. I made a note of the spot and a few nights later found another one around 5 meters away from the first. This time dated 1869.
I was using Deus fast with a few tweaks, notching out up to 25.
I've hit the site all week and dug around 100 holes over around a 25 x 25 patch.
I've been changing the freq between 18 kHz and 12 kHZ, lowering the speed of my swing and reducing the silencer and reactivity to gain more depth.
Since then I've found a ton of buttons, loads of lead, some big iron, smelted bronze, large hammered - Elizabeth Shilling, large lead weight, spindle whorl and a few Roman coins.
The soil is pretty stoney but dry and easy to dig, around 12" I hit thick patches of matted corn.

I know the gold coins may have come from a purse drop but in the hope there is a hoard and the 2 I've found have been clipped off the top can anyone advise what types of settings I should be using to find either the hoard or more scattered sovereign's (should they even exist)
I have a Deus with 11" coil.
I also have a Garrett ATX and wonder if that will be better suited for the job?
I'm guessing I should remove all discrim and notches and just dig everything but at what freq would you recommend? Do I try them all?

Thanks and happy hunting!

Thanks Jeff! The first was amazing and the second I couldn't quite believe. Very fortunate!

You work both machines in harmony with one another, use the Deus as you have mentioned but in a grid pattern, spending some times with 11 and 18 khz as those would be the most favourable freq for gold, then change direction and repeat the process this will increase your odds in your favour and also if its a small area that you are detecting remove the trash as well.

Then use the big fella for the depth and then once again change direction, the more you clean it out with the Deus the better chance you have with the ATX,some folks including myself use a spray paint, you initially go over the area with a VLF machine in your case the Deus and if you suspect a deep target then use some form of marker in my case a quick dab of spray paint or golf tees do exactly the same, the go over the area again with the Pulse machine i use either my TDI Pro or my Crossbow both go down deep.

Methodically cover of the area may seem a boring job but can be very productive especially when you find some nice finds that a normal detector just cannot reach ;)

Work both the Deus and ATX in harmony and when too use them, you have 2 powerful tools that can be very productive when used together ;)
Equinox 6'',11'' and 15'' coils.
Deus 2 9'' coil.
Minelab GPX 14'' and 18'' Coiltek coils.
Fisher TW-5 twin box.
Nexus MP 13'' coil.
Nexus SE dual 9'' coil.
Whites TDI Pro 20'' coil.

Great advice, thank you! I'd best get that ATX on charge. Been gathering dust for a while now!
Hoping for another Twinstead Hoard...minus all the drama of course!

Ah,the famous Twinstead Hoard that bought a terrible amount of bad publicity to the hobby, the selected few folks that had been asked to go back after found some more, then its just seemed to drop of the radar, never did find out what the final verdict was.

There is a video on YouTube of Skunkypaul and others helping with the final recovery.

I'm not a huge distance from there so perhaps people just loved throwing away sovereigns around here! Ha ha

Nice pair of half sovreigns and great advice from Mega B ::g

Put a pair of lines out and detect the channels in one direction, then at 90 degrees, suprising how much you can miss even if you think you have done the area methodically already.
I'm still burning you'll never put the spark out in my soul
