Magnet fishing & the law

Post by 1992ajb »

Hi everyone!

I know this ha probably been asked before. But where does magnet fishing fit with the law? Do you need permission to magnet canals and rivers or can you just chuck one in anywhere? Also does/would this apply to the ocean too??

Cheers

i do this a lot with my son and we have a great time. i have done it on rivers and at weymouth harbour whilst crab fishing. never have we been challenged as to what we are doing. i would stress that i am not even aware if there is a law or not. we always go to public places and just mind our own business and always avoid fishermen. mostly we just get interested people. i cant see that you will be doing any harm.

Why the distinction with magnet fishing ... detecting is detecting ... doesnt matter whether you do it with a dredge, magnet, or metal detector .... and it doesnt matter whether water is involved or not... the laws re detecting are the same.
The answer is that you cant go chucking magnets anywhere... canals and rivers have owners ... and those owners own what is on the river bed. Also just because you may not be challenged it doesnt follow that you have an automatic green light to do it. As always if the owner has given you permission then its Happy hunting .. Good luck.
