Hi GUys, I was lucky enough to get a 4.5 inch coil free when i got my Explorer SE and i just wondered if now would bw a good time to use it. The scenario is this.....
I have a nice old pasture permission that in past month alone has yielded Edward III groat and half groat within a foot of each other and a Lizzie shilling 80 feet or so away but apart form that absolutely nothing.... like nothing apart form iron nails and bits of hat i think are green waste. We have covered the area thoroughly and get loads of nulling and ive dug scratchy signals just incase and always nothing....
Would this coil be more accurate if there are other coins to weedle out? Im just worried that there are more hammereds there whihc we may be missing as the SE tends to be really bad at recovery, we tested a large silver hammered in a test bed next to a nail and it just nulled, didn't signal the coin till we put nail 6 inches away!!!!!
Anyway thanks in advance and sorry for rambling.
Benefits of a 4.5 inch coil??

I can not comment on the Explorer specifically, but I find this page relating to the NEL coils very useful http://nelcoil.com/index.php?route=common/home
Although it relates specifically to NEL coils it would be a good guide to other makes. As you can see the 2 smallest coils both score 10 /10 for sensitivity to small targets (including hammies) and 10 and 9.5 out of 10 for seperation of targets.
So I suspect in answer the question your smaller coil would give better seperation between the nails / trash and any possible coins. So by trying the small coil you might find some more hammies, but they might just not be there.
The down side of the small coil is the very limited coverage it will give so to cover the area will take much longer than doing it with the standard coil.

I used one on my F75 yesterday looking for a water meter cover .
Chap pointed to his verge where he thought it was which was full of bracken gorse and a jumble of brambles the day before so i knew the only coil that would work was a small one.
I used Stat mode which was excellent ,you just poked the coil in and if something was there it told you so
Lots of drink cans unfortunately but i found the cover after ten mins on the opposite side of the track under 6" of leaves .
The chap was very pleased ,i like to return favours when i can he lets me find his bullets and ring pulls in his woods i find his cover in return

For the explorer to be nulling you must be using discrimination ? use no discrimation and you should hear the good targets next to iron, if you are discriminating iron even using a smaller coil will only give a marginal benefit as it will still null .
