Hi, you used to need a permit (free) for Crown Estate beaches but you are correct in saying that you no longer need one, however you do need to agree to the T&Cs.

The Crown Estate only control certain beaches, both the T&Cs and map of the beaches they control can be found here http://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/rural-a ... detecting/

This permission only covers the area between mean high and low water marks, also check that they are not part of protected SSSIs or been leased out (town beaches especially are some times used out to the council).
