Advice on using Hearing Aids with Metal Detectors

Great post. I get my hearing aid on the 19th of November. I can hear most things but lose high frequencies. This could explain why I struggled so much with the E-Trac.

So from what you are saying, if my aids are compatible with an induction loop I have no need to wear headphones, I can just induction loop strain into my hearing aids?????

Hi Ian,
Yes there currently are a few options I outlined but if you have a loop system on your new aids you should just need the portable neckloop with the 1/4 inch headphone connector on the end. This would allow you to switch the aids to loop then receive the sounds via the neckloop instead of having to wear postaural headphones.

I've just starting detecting and one of the issues was how I could best hear the tones as I have two aids. Taking them out and using headphones was a problem in that I couldnt hear properly when people came to talk to me and had to put aids back in. Not very practical! So I got one of these:
Geemarc CliLOOP Hands Free Neckloop from Amazon (about 35 pounds) and plug it into the headphone socket on my detector place the loop over my neck under my coat and switch my aids to the T setting. Works great and now when peeps come to talk I just switch aids back to normal ( appears I am merely scratching my ear) and can hear them ok.

Can also use with phone and mp3 player etc

Have no problems with wind noise on T setting

I don't know that I have a hearing problem but from a teenager had difficulties differentiating between spoke and background noise. I never particularly liked parties of more than 1/2 dozen people or dances perhaps because of this.

I now have tinnitus which is greatly amplified by certain types of motor cycle helmet. I wonder if the same is true of headphones. I know when walking in head phones I hear thumping so I have to step gently. Would some tend to resonate or amplify certain hearing conditions.?

I was wondering if affordable blue-tooth hearing-aid like devices were available for those of us without serious hearing difficulties, in place of headphones, as I really don't like my ears being covered all the time.

we've had some dodgy moment's but manage with a signaling system & he doesn't use detector now but wants to dig the finds when we're out together,

I am deaf in my left ear and my right ear is not great either. Due to sounds in the army, I was RE ? They closed the door to squaddies for compo from my time in the 'green machine'.

I rarely use my hearing aid in my left ear, and wouldn't be able to use it under my headphones anyway.

Hello 'stargazer' I also wear hearing aids (2) but the loss is not as significant as yours perhaps so I don't use need to wear them when detecting.

My aids (Phonac) would allow the use of full cup (over-ear) h/phones as they really are very small. Anyone can try one or a pair for a 1 month trial, which is what I did. There's no pressure to purchase them and they can just be returned but the improvement they make really is surprising.

It may be worthwhile checking it out. Any 'Boots' Chemist can arrange it and as said the trial is completely free. All the best. Regards ss47
