Grimsby / Cleethopes beach
Hi all,
has anybody detected on Grimsby or Cleethopes beach. It just so happens that I could be up there next Friday / Saturday for the day with a few hours to kill. I have never detected on the beach before. I have an Ace 250, will this work OK?
Thanks
Andi

They told me I’d never be any good at poetry, because I’m dyslexic, but so far I’ve made 3 jugs and a vase.

The Garrett Ace range does not have the best reputation for on wet sand, especially if highly mineralised (but this also applies to a lot of detectors in the lower price range so is not Garrett specific).
However having said that I used my 250 on wet sand on the beaches in the South West and it was mainly fine with only the odd false signal on "black sand". But I understand the beaches in the South West are more "detector friendly" while the beaches in the North East are more mineralised so more likely to cause problems.
Certainly give it a try and see how it goes, if you have problems on the wet sand either knock the sensitivity back a notch or two or keep to the dry sand higher up the beach where I am sure you will be fine.
No idea about Grimsby / Cleethopes beaches but if they are like the ones I occasionally visit expect a good selection of bottle tops and ring pulls
but with luck you should get a few "spendables" to help towards the parking (or if thats free a cup of tea to warm you up - needed by the forecast!).

Sudden thought.
The coil on the 250 is waterproof so you are able to search in shallow water with no problems.
eg sometimes you get a rock on a sandy beach and it forms a shallow pool around the rock, these can also collect coins etc so feel safe in detecting them (often good for fishing weights if nothing else!).
But the control box is only water resistant ..... so ensure you do not drop it in the water!.

I'll be on the beach tomorrow morning, so if you're around, come over and say hello. I'll be the idiot digging holes to recover pop cans

Well, it turns out Grimsby doesn't have any beaches that can be detected and the beaches at Cleethorpes are areas of scientific interest, so can't be detected either. I therefore headed for the beach at Mablethorpe. I spent 2 hours searching and found this:
The obligatory pop can, a tent peg, a milk carton seal, a toy race car and a 1970 10p.... so I conclude that Mablethorpe beach is very clean. I'm happy in the knowledge that I have left the beach cleaner than when I arrived

I've been on Cleethorpes beach not knowing it was a conservation area (oops!). I only went on once because my Garrett Ace 250 went nuts on wet sand. The dry stuff was OK but the finds were abismal, rusty old beer cans and bits of unidentifiable aluminium. My advice is to head to the tourist area, stay on dry sand and don't get your hopes up.

I'm off to Bridlington beach today. Does anyone know of detecting restrictions?

One from a complete novice, how do you tell if a beach is free to search, is forbidden to search or permissions are needed to search? I’ve found the Crown Estates information but that only covers part of the country's foreshore.

I'm not sure. I did look at Cleethorpes beech on the website and it didn't mention, or if it did I didn't see it, anything about it being a SSI or anything about not detecting. I only found this out by getting kitted up and only then seeing the signs at the steps to the beach.JWL wrote: Sat Jan 20, 2018 1:55 pm One from a complete novice, how do you tell if a beach is free to search, is forbidden to search or permissions are needed to search? I'd be interested to see if there is a national resource on beach accessibility.

That’s what worries me Shaggy, there’s got to be an easier way of gaining knowledge of what’s allowed and what's not other than from the naughty seat at your local magistrate's court.
Cleethorpes Beach is OK to detect on. I do it most weekends. It’s included on the Crown Estate maps for the wet sand and, for the dry sand, the council are OK with detecting. You no longer require a permit.

There is a sign at the steps by the pier that's says SSI fine £200? Maybe I'm mistaken?

I’ve not seen that and I was there last weekend. I’ll be sure to look out for it next time though. I hope it’s not a new ruling.shaggybfc wrote: Sun Jan 21, 2018 7:57 pmHi Mart,mart61 wrote: Sun Jan 21, 2018 7:43 pm Cleethorpes Beach is OK to detect on. I do it most weekends. Here’s the NE Lincs metal detecting code of conduct. If you look in the bottom right hand corner you’ll see, in the box, the areas you can detect in.shaggybfc wrote: Sun Jan 21, 2018 7:57 pmHi Mart,mart61 wrote: Sun Jan 21, 2018 7:43 pm Cleethorpes Beach is OK to detect on.
