burnham on sea

Post by digger360 »

Hi been given the use of a flat in burnham on sea right on the esplanade and fancy a bit of detecting down there ..i have never been to burnham on sea before and don't know anything about the place / area /history and could do with reading up on it before we go any ideas ?
i have a foreshore permit but looking at the map its a bit vague as to where the bit that i cannot detect on in the town centre is ?
it would be so nice to be able to get up at first light and just cross the rd and start decting before the world wakes up especially as we will be using the flat over the bank holiday week ends coming up ...do these beaches get really busy
or is it worth going out of the town ?
as i have never detected on a beach any tips will be greatly received ..i will be using a garret euroace
is it worth getting some kind of sand scoop instead of my mini shovel
can't wait to go as it will be a new adventure

jimmyuk
thanks for the reply ...i had a vision in my head of getting up walking across the rd with a cup of coffee and a fag in one hand dector in the other and having a couple of hrs peace and quiet digging in nice dry fluffy sand finding treasure ... oh well its a nice dream anyway
back to reality ...don't bother with the sand scoop then
are there any areas you would recommend ? ...without giving too much away as i did see another thread on brean sands

thanks for all the replies
getting all excited now after having a look on google earth at photo's theres miles of sand / mud to go at .. but where do you start !!!
this is harder than inland at least you know how much land you have
did have a quick look on the council website and they mechanically clean the beach perhaps that explains very little trash is it worth still detecting there ?
even found a youtube vid explaining how to make a sand scoop

Burnham-on-sea was very popular as a holiday destination when the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway was operating prior to closure in the 1960s. Of course, numbers of visitors were boosted when it took numbers of rail travellers from the Bristol area on what was the Great Western Railway. Though it may not be popular today, there is no reason why you shouldn't find coins and relics going back to the victorian era, especially following a good storm. Good luck for when you decide to go there, digger. :D
Will I? Won't I? What kind of silly question is that?
