Sorry I can't help on that one
but enjoy the day out, every day spent detecting is a valuable experience and a lesson learned. There's always the possibility of finding one or two 'shipwreck' losses
Not too sure about the rain forecast but that's a minor consideration that shouldn't put you off the challenge.
Good Luck. Regards ss47

what ever you don't go up the river there are swans and geese that will attack you .
Good beach. Rumours of a buried roman building under the sand dunes close by. And the old fortified 15th century Manor House close to the dunes is good. There was also rumours of a high way man who plundered the area and buried his loot under a bridge. The castle is a nice example. Enjoy

Hi 633
Been to Ogmore beach a few times with no luck however I know a gold Portuguese or Spanish coin has been found not far from the river mouth. Newton beach to the west has had ancient finds going back to the bronze age. Newton was also once a port many centuries ago. My father always told me to try Ogmore because of the many wrecks and wreckage resulting from the notorious Tusker rocks that lie just offshore .
There are many stories of wreckers along that coast the most notorious was the wrecker lord Thomas Vaughan of Dunraven Castle Southerndown who tied lamps to the backs of sheep on the cliffs and lured ships in. Many are said to have come to grief at Southerdown beach. His chief henchman was Matt of the Iron Hand who brought the lord a severed hand that he'd cut from a corpse on the beach ,when the lord removed the gold ring from the hand to his horror he recognised it as being his sons . Just one of the folk tales that abound in the area.
Southerndown has produced many rings and jewellery in the past and was very popular with bathers from Bridgend and the Vale also a good place for fossils .With the right beach machine those beaches are defiantly worth a try and the views of the lias limestone cliffs are spectacular a great day out even if you don't find anything -but you never know if you don't try !!
