Can you not rinse the stem down with a water bottle before collapsing.

Most detectorists would be more interested in performance rather than looks anyway. Mud, sand or whatever, it is just a work tool, it will still get marked whatever you do. Even the screen can be replaced if it gets scratched up, though phone screen savers help prevent this. All the time spent devising ways to protect and keep the machine in as new condition would be more enjoyably spent just being out there detecting. I'd recommend just waxing the lower shaft, occasionally cleaning and just accepting the inevitable normal use scratches.
Just my own personal opinion of course. :D :))
I suppose it's all really down to personal preference. I initially thought that covering the stem was a 'bit over the top,' but now that is the road I want to go down.

I've kept all my metal detectors, and other electronic stuff in good condition, as I always have an end goal of selling them on, and 'trading up.'

Makes sense, however if you are retracting it several times in one session (as I often walk quite a distance between various detecting sites) it might be a bit impractical.

I'm going to try a cover, and see how that works, then I might try the other ideas.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Search for Minelab Mal to see it.
Thanks Fred. Watched the vid and this does look like a decent setup at a reasonable price... I may invest myself ::g Particularly as I find the arm cup a little roomy.

Thanks Fred, very helpful! I took a punt on this: not because I am particularly precious about it, but it does allow me to be a bit more careless :) Very pleased with it. It fits well and the cover/padding for the cuff really does the job! ::g

"careless"? In my life ... the scratches are proof positive that I "care" ... without the scratches I may as well put the machine into a museum. One good suggestion above has to be ... buy two 2 lower stems ... 1 for the garage cabinet, and the other for swinging carelessly ... and relish how good a careless swing feels... its pure bliss, and well worth a million or more scratches.

When I get home I wash my detector down, especially if I have been to the beach, but I don’t do beach detecting very often. I then dry off the shaft and spray with furniture polish.

Lol!! Try as I might, I can't disagree with you OA, but my machine feels all soft and cuddly now and... she's a nice shade of camo, so the coins won't see me coming :-*

All my gear has scratches, no mater what I did to prevent them they appeared.

Turns out it was a scratch on my glasses.

Go to Pound Shop get an inner tube for a bike and cut to size then fit onto stem. I use baby talc to clean the stem . Never use furniture polish. Been using this method for several years.

I’m with you detectorman. ::g

That said I would consider the scratches you mention as honest wear and not abuse.
Do that especially at Morrison's supermarket car park in Newquay.
