GPS app
Can anyone recommend an app for precisely marking positions of finds? I can see a number are available but I'd like to know other users' experience with them.

Hi, I don't know much about hand held GPS devices but if you intended to use the word 'precisely', I'd say therein probably lies a problem. More knowledgeable replies will surely follow though.
Good Luck

Cheers. I should make it clear I'm looking for an iPhone app, and when I say precisely I don't expect pinpoint accuracy from a free app, just something that guide me reasonably close to a previous find.

I use GPS Status on my phone. It's Android so I don't know if they have it for iOS. Supposedly it's accurate within a few metres if you give it time to properly lock in. I haven't been able to test that properly, but when I plot the findspots it's close enough to take me back to the area and produce a useful pattern of finds.
The only downside is that using NGR mode only gives you an 8-figure reference, so I have it set to give lat/long and then have to convert these later, which then gives me a 10-figure grid reference.

I use Gridpoint GB on my iPhone but even then it's often + or - 11metres. But it's better than nothing I suppose. Obviously it gives you a grid reference. Until I come across another one it's better than nothing I suppose. Some sophisticated digital cameras now have GPS built into them. I realise what I have said isn't probably worth much as I too would like almost pinpoint accuracy, but there is never a "free lunch" in life.

I was recommended GPS OS - seems to do the job nicely for Grid References, 6,8 or 10 figure.
For a small upgrade charge (99p?) you can also get a magnetic compass bearing, share your grid reference or link to Google maps.
Basic version is free on App Store so worth a shot!

Load it into ExifViewer and write the coordinates down and give to FLO
GPS isn't 100% but should be down to less than 5 metres.
TectOTrak seems rather good on the iPhone. Allows you to record your tracks in the field and places a photo on the find spot. Been using it for a couple of weeks and although not pinpoint, it is accurate enough for my purposes. From the App Store and cost £9 iirc

I second that recommendation - it's a very nifty thing.

I use ISmartDetect on my IPhone, it costs about a tenner and is quite good.
It saves two copies of the same photo, one has all of the data on it and the other doesn’t which is handy if you want to share your photos but keep the location secret.

I'm using Locus Map for Android. You can mark your spot with hundreds of symbols, give a description and even attach photos. The spots can be organized in folders.
There is also the ability to download offline maps and overlay WMS services (like historical, topographical or cadastral maps).

Does anyone know how to delete the maps off TectOTrak?
I want to remove a field that was pretty barren that I don't detect on anymore.

I use the memory map app but it's not easy (maybe impossible?) to use on an Apple Iphone.Wessexlad wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 9:07 pm Can anyone recommend an app for precisely marking positions of finds? I can see a number are available but I'd like to know other users' experience with them.
Works on any android but MUST have TRUE GPS. The Samsung Galaxy range do. Other problems is cost or £300 (sometimes on offer from £100) for 25,000 scale OS maps for whole of England & Scotland (OS 50,000 scale is cheaper), usually needs micro sim as map is one file of around 9 gig for OS 25,000 scale map.
You can add marks, follow routes or record a tracks etc and get 10 digit NGR-lat/long and use on 5 devices (computer, tablet phone etc.).
