My missus and I were visiting the area around the gem fields so we decided to do a spot of fossicking. We spent 3 hours one early morning before the sun got too hot - managed to get 6 gem quality sapphires, of which the 3 largest were all-star sapphires. I can recommend the areas around Sapphire and Rubyvale.

Hi albus all clear now your very right it wouldn't suit everyone.the isolation and frustration of finding nothing .the cost of getting there is high but hey I know people who spend a fortune on a cruise my idea of hell at least with an Oz trip you got a chance of covering costs.plus unforgettable experience if you survive.

if you survive ???? sounds tempting x; I would stick to OA list if you still decide to take a stranger if I were you.

Have a good trip ::g

There's no problem with survival these days what with CB and Sat Phones. You can hire Sat phones in Perth along with all the other equipment, there also used to be a big detecting shop in Kalgoorlie that hired out equipment and detectors.
Crocodiles aren't a big problem unless you go way up North and near rivers or large lakes.

Being careful is the main thing, looking out for snakes, spiders and scorpions. Roo's will stay well away if you make enough noise.
However I wouldnt go out into the bush with someone I didnt know and trust very well, but saying that, as the detecting season over there is now at an end and doesnt start till next year there is enough time to get to know someone.

These days I'm happy going down to the South of France, sluicing and panning in warm water, camping in our little caravan, drinking lots of cheap beer and wine and eating lots of good food. Admittedly we only get maybe 4 or 5 grammes but its fun and a nice holiday.

Were off again next year, if anyone wants to tag along PM me.

It’s one of the things I’d love to do if I had the time and the finances.
One of my favourite programs is Aussie Gold Hunters.
I just dream of waving my detector over apparently barren ground and getting a good signal, digging it out and putting a lump of gold that’s never seen the light of day into my hand.
