Coil battery only lasts 6-7 hours.

Post by janner53 »

Last month I sent my standard 9" coil off to have a new battery fitted. It came back and charges up fine. Problem I have now is that I can only detect for 6-7 hours and then the coil is flat. Before I could stay out all day and still have charge left. At first I thought because its a new battery things might change after a few charges but yesterday after charging it for the 5th time come 3pm it was showing nearly flat. So no improvement there. All I am doing different from last time is running my Deus on Full Tones, wouldn't have thought that would have caused it.
I am thinking of sending it back unless there is any other idea. What about re-installing the 3.2 software. I'm running on 3.2 now.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Has it actually gone flat? I know mine will show little charge and keep going for hours.

No it hasn't actually gone flat, but has got to the point where the coil icon is flashing.

I went on a rally this weekend, using deus, detected a total of approx. 12 hours and charge on 11 inch coil was showing about 40% remaining,so obviously something awry with yours.I assume you had the battery replaced by a reputable dealer ? I'm stumped for a reason, but hope you get it sorted soon.

P.S I also use full tones and 3.2 so that wouldn't be the reason.Won't do any harm to do a re-install as only takes a short while, but I reckon it's something else, good luck !

Thank you for replies. I will try a re-install, if that fails I will contact Regtons who changed the battery and see what they have to say.

I was hoping to have a full days detecting to check the reinstall, but only managed to get out for 4 hours. After that 4 hours it showed I had used 50% of my battery power. So doesen't look very good for mine. Hope you get yours sorted.

As I need to have my battery replaced I would be very interested in how you get on at Regtons.
Thanks in advance and good luck with getting your coil sorted. ::g

I have had problems as well with a 9 inch coil that was coming up to its two year warranty time. I use the coil a lot so i assumed that the battery was going down.

I sent the coil back to Regtons who said after testing that it was fine, but i have still only been getting 7 or 8 hours after a full charge. Cant trust it so using another coil i have.

Batteries are almost never covered under warranty, for any product. Battery life is dependant on so many factors, even the weather (temperature) affects them. Maybe if it had leaked you could claim a defect but if a machine is still working then this won't be the case.

Also the settings used on your machine will use less/more power, so all these things need to be taken into consideration. Usually newer software means there will be tweaks to battery performance too but as XP doesn't release any changelog I'd take any 'latest software is better than the previous version battery' type claims with a pinch of salt as I've seen a few people on the forum suggest they get longer life.

Doesn't sound like there's a problem with anyone's batteries in this thread. The coil icon can flash on a controller for about 2hrs of use before the coil shuts off.

I like the newer design for the coil batteries where you can take it out of the stem and replace with a new fully charged battery in an instant. Hopefully they stick with that method in future rather than sealing them inside the coils. And those coil clips are just a bad design choice, everybody's breaks sooner or later.

It doesn't take long to recharge the coil, so using an 'emergency' type usb charger isn't difficult when out and about. In the time it takes you to sit down and have a sandwich you've got another hours worth of charge in the coil. Perhaps worth buying one if you're not happy with the length of time your coils are lasting.

I've used my machine quite a lot for about 7 years now and not changed the battery yet. It still lasts a good 8hrs or so. When I do change it I might modify the coil so I can just use replacable batteries but need to find one long and thin enough to get inside the lower stem. If anyone has opened up a newer stem coil battery please let me know as I'd love to see an image of the actual battery so I could just order the same type.

Oh and newer coil lipo batteries require conditioning before they reach their full charge potential so they should improve after a few charges.

I would be rather miffed at this also, that said my very first port of call would be a quick call to the people who did the work.

Just a thought ... after charging and disengaging the wires .. I always switch the whole set up to on, and then do a manual switch-off.. when I dont do this I sometimes find that my coil has discharged somewhat.
Imagine there is no heaven, only sky above us.
