Interesting finds- wet or dry sand?

Hi,
I am brand new to metal detecting. My search so far has consisted of the back garden which uncovered one nail
My Husband and I are off to explore a beach this weekend. As newbies we will be starting off on dry sand but, it got me wondering where people tend to discover their most interesting beach finds, wet or dry sand?
Can anyone advise please? Do you tend to find anything interesting in dry sand or do you have more success in wet sand?

On the beach I do I would say 98 % of my finds are in the soft sand at mundesley which ive now been doing for 10yrs ,it tends to be a max of say 1ft ish of soft sand for first 6m from wall, is big pebbles under the sand then goes to what ever depth sand to very fine shingle under the sand which I've never really had much luck with ....I've tryed all sorts of detectors.....single freq...pi .... fbs...fbs2 and it's nether not there or got before I go ???? , there the bulk of the finds are modern ive tryed doing the cuts after various storms but to no avail so good luck , for me it's something to do while Mrs swims and I might get the odd £

Normally, but not always, modern on the dry and older and better stuff on the wet. Junk also often tends to accumulate more in the dry stuff. That can change after storms when the dry becomes wet or is cut away!

You will never really be sure though until you get to know the beach, which can take a while, and even then they will throw up the occasional surprise.

Depends on the beach I suspect, and how much is covered by the tides ect..Also remember some machines struggle on wet sand and don’t cope that well....

What detector do u have?

We brought the Garrett Ace 250.

I know it is just a beginners metal detector and may not give the best results on the beach but, i have been watching some videos for tips, like this one;



It is hard as beginners to know what to buy though.

Do you buy a more expensive model so to not grow out of a beginners one too soon? But then what happens if it is a hobby not for you and it ends up in the spare bedroom or garage alongside the exercise bike or telescope etc (for which you had every intention of using)

I couldn't justify spending more than £200 to start (although the Husband would have done if he had it his way).

It is something we have both always been interested in though even from a young age so, i am hopeful we will stick with it.

Can't wait to go exploring this weekend and hope to attend some rallies over the coming months.

Its a perfectly sensible choice as a first machine and a good all-rounder. I am sure you will have good fun with it....and it will hold its value well
