Roman Brooches

Evening Ladies /Gents, I have a question of course aimed at XP Deus users….
Something has been puzzling me over the last couple of seasons, I search a few Roman sites where I have found plenty of Roman coins and pottery however I have only found 1 Roman broach and some broach fragments.
Everywhere I look and listen especially the internet, Roman broaches on Roman sites should be plentiful !!
So I am looking if possible to improve my program and maybe search technique.
I am interested if anyone out there has found any with their Deus ? If yes , I would be very interested if anyone can remember or maybe just an air test what signal was received and what program was being used………..
Most notably I am interested in what was shown on the `XY` screen since this is the screen I use as my preference is coin shooting. I am aware that broaches can be of all shapes and sizes which effects the signal.
The only intact bronze Roman bow broach I have gives a clear coin signal ….
Of course I could just be unlucky………..

It took me ages to find my first roman fibula brooch, even though I was finding plenty of roman coinage, just because it is a roman site does not mean it is or was a roman settlement.

PS `Bargeman`, any recommendations for a Roman Coin shooting program, what`s your current favourite ...........?

It totally depends on the site. Some sites are packed full of coins with one brooch for say every 50 coins as a rough ratio. Which if you think about it, makes a lot of sense based on the average coin to brooch ratio on the average Roman briton. Temple sites and rivers will give you a lot more brooches. Always nice when they come up and I often find they have a deep, thick tone. only work off tones so can't really help on readings I'm afraid. Good luck.

I think mine came in at 70 on the Deus and sounded clean like a coin, though if it still had it's iron pin it maybe would have been a bit scratchy. Quite often things turn up when you least expect them.

The trouble is they can sound a bit irony because of the pin. Any high tones are worth digging.

What coil and programme are using?

As said above, some will give you a scratchy signal but the top note should tell you whether to dig or not. Nearly all of mine presented like this.

This Saxon cruciform is a prime example and very nearly didn't get dug, with all that iron stuck to the back.

I don't go by numbers either but brooches (and indeed most Roman bronzes) generally come in around the mid-fifties on the Ultimate programme. But trust your lugholes above all else.

I am just the opposite to you.. l have had 4 Roman brooches over the years in my area but not one identifiable coin, hundreds of finds then last year a gold celtic starter .. hard to believe... but l suppose that's how it goes in the MD world. The last brooch was a large one and gave a banging signal l use the hot mode.

Totally agree about the ratio. I also believe in my ratio that one coin in every dozen or more is of good enough quality to photograph.

I would also be interested in your thoughts of what program you would use to `winkle` out any Roman coins from large pottery scatters.?? Where every sweep you get all sorts of chatter and negative feedback........

I am think maybe I should have a high reactivity set ?
