Foreign Coin Feature : Canada

Post by Dave8472 »

The second commonwealth set today is for Canada. Just the one coin dating to 1944, also probably from a Canadian serviceman, another park find. The badges are my favourites. The copper alloy one is from Nova Scotia, quiet a rare find in the UK. The Silver one is in fact a ‘sweetheart’ brooch dating to the WWI period and I researched that directly with a museum in Canada that has a large display of them.

Most were found in Kent and even the London ones are postal Kent (PAS = Greater London) as that's where I mainly detect. A few notes on the coins and video. All the 'copper alloy' ones are colour photoshopped in order to harmonise the colour variations in photography so they are not all brown in real life. The nickel and silver coins are also 'grey scaled'. The sizes are also scaled but there is nothing unusual in any of them that need explaining ::g. The use of YouTube was just a simple way of displaying them for the forum with the sizing and quantity limits etc, as I don't like linking off to hosting sites. I don't do YouTube so nothing to subscribe to :)) It’s just a video dumping ground for me :-O It is best viewed within the forum as it is only low resolution. If you spot any dating errors on the spreadsheet timeline please let me know !

Please feel free to add any Canadian (ONLY) coin finds to my post, always interested to see others ::g

Hi Dave,
Saw your post and remembered a Canadian 10c 1931 George V coin that I found some months ago near to the docks area at Teignmouth, in Devon.
It looked nice after a good clean, but in retrospect perhaps I should have left it as found.
Cheers 👍
Len

That’s a nice one Len, yeah it’s always tricky on how much to clean the silvers, I must admit anything 20th Century I tend to clean more. I try and keep the patina on the older ones unless they are blotchy.

I've found one Canadian coin in the Netherlands. Our village, where the coin was found, was liberated by British and Canadian soldiers. Very cool to think that a soldier lost it back then. It's a nice piece of history [88/]

I thought this was just a Victorian farthing until I gave it a clean, turns out to be a 1864 ½ cent coin from Nova Scotia in Canada. I must admit I didn’t know that any of the provinces had ever issued their own coins, so every day is a school day as they say!

This particular coin only had a mintage of 400k which seems quite small. They were minted by the Royal Mint in London so I wonder how this coin made its way back across the Atlantic?
