It's the 'extra' bit of brass wrapped around the bullet. The remains of the neck of the cartridge are still in place, showing the entire round went into the ground complete and has been broken apart over the years, probably by plough damage.

So ... if I find just the pointy bit with nothing else round the neck, are they always ok to bring home ?

Ah it's ok, friend has just drawn me a picture lol.

Quick question though, a bullet this size, are we talking for shooting at people ?

And can you tell how old they are ?

LOL ! Made me laugh that did :) :) :)

Let's face it, if someone is trying to kill you, I doubt you're going to consider how big the gun is you're firing back at them.....you're just going to open up !

The 50cal was used mainly in American aircraft and was intended to shoot down aircraft, kill pilots and strafe ground forces. However, it was also widely used in a ground attack role, being mounted on many different tanks and vehicles, and an anti-aircraft role. In short, it was used to shoot anything from a rabbit up to and including a steam engine with 65 trucks attached. There wouldn't be much left of the rabbit, or the train !

NO!!! The bullet could be armour piercing which is dangerous and illegal, it could be incendiary, which burns very hot and very fast when the core is exposed!!! RRPG has posted a link which I believe is sticky in the ordnance forum. You can't test them with a magnet too, if it sticks, it's armour piercing steel core, which is again, illegal!!

For your info, this is the bullet (sometimes referred to as the 'head')

And this is the case!

What you have is the remains of the neck (where the case narrows) still in place around the bullet!!!
