Oldest finds on beaches??

Post by human »

I was wondering if the beach(wet sand and surf) turns up OLD finds for any of you beach hunters? I'm on land at the mo due to limitations of my detector(laser hawkeye) but do fancy a go on the beaches near me,new detector required i know.Is it mostly recent losses of coin and jewellry and cans ;) or has anyone found roman/medieval coins etc or have they long since been erroded to nothing by the action of sea and salt. :-/

In the 80's a chap near us (Weymouth), found a gold pointer in Bowleaze cove on the beach...it's reputed to have belonged to Alfred the Great............ nice find.went for an absolute fortune.

Cheers folks.that all sounds promissing.I have two roman forts near me in kent. The imediate shore line comes under the juristriction of the crown and would be available to detect with the downloaded foreshore permit(i think, according to their map and wording).Would love to continue to find the really old bits + is a bit more off the beaten track of other detectorists who hit the currently popular beaches locally.Do you think it worth a try?

I've had lots of roman coins from the beach deep down in the black stuff.

Used this photo a few times now, sorry.

Finds on beaches can come from across the centuries. Don't forget that hundreds of ships have sunk around Britain's coastline, and coins from these are continually being washed up during storms. You just have to be there at the right time, that's all, :D
Will I? Won't I? What kind of silly question is that?
