hi,
totally new to this, can anyone tell me do you need a licence to metal detect and can you detect on the Northumberland coast line?

No licence is needed to do detecting in Great Britain. You just need the permission of the landowner. On beaches you can detect them if they are Crown property, provided they haven't got a local bylaw that stops you. More details can be found here viewtopic.php?f=12&t=558

If you aren't sure if a particular beach is ok then please ask on here and you'll get local knowledge of any restrictions or other issues.
