Foreign Coin Feature : Italy

Post by Dave8472 »

Italy added to the index. Here are my Italian coins found in the UK

Most were found in Kent and even the London ones are postal Kent (PAS = Greater London) as that's where I mainly detect. A few notes on the coins. All the 'copper alloy' ones are colour photoshopped in order to harmonise the colour variations in photography so they are not all brown in real life. The sizes are also scaled but there is nothing unusual in any of them that need explaining ::g. If you spot any dating errors on the spreadsheet timeline please let me know !

Please feel free to add any Italian (ONLY) coin finds to my post, always interested to see others ::g

Coins added can be found anywhere in the world ;)

Here is my only Italian coin, a 1863 silver Victor Emanuelle II 20 centesimi, a bit wrecked but you can identify the mint as Milan and probably from a watch chain given that it was drilled, about the size of a 6d. I like something a bit out of the ordinary [08/]

If you are interested in Italian coins the equivalent of Spinks for Italy is

Montenegro - MANUALE DEL COLLEZIONISTA DI MONETE ITALIANE

Also showing off a bit now but I used to drop over the border from Switzerland and go detecting just into Italy. This is the Grand St. Bernard Pass on the Italian side. This was the route Napoleon took his armies over the Alps. The irony is I have found more Italian coinage in the UK than I ever did there !!

So far I've found one Italian coin in the Netherlands. The find location was all the way in the south near the Belgian border. It probably ended up in the Netherlands through a Belgian passer by. The Italian currency was also accepted in Belgium (and some other countries), because of the Latin Monetary Union.
