There will be loads of dumps around Wigan - but will have been dug out long ago.

Bottle digging has been popular since the early 1970s & most well known & easy to find dumps have long been investigated.

There may still be a few small farm type dumps to be explored.

Best to check out a dedicated UK bottle collecting forum - where you will find some help with this as well as a few Youtube videos that show how to locate old dumps.

Not dug for many years - but still take an interest in this subject.

Good luck & happy hunting

A large field on one of the farms where I have permission has an abundance of broken glass, pottery as well as lots of metallic bits and pieces scattered over it - I knew that it had been dumped on at some time in the past. The farmer said that it was know as the "dump field".

I tried digging a few test holes to investigate - but came up blank every time. I tried everything I could think of to locate the dump - talking to the farmer, Google Earth, old 6 inch ordnance survey maps - nothing.

A few years later I had the opportunity to examine some large scale old maps of the area (25 inch to the mile) & there it was ... a small pond in one corner of the field that was no longer there & had been filled in around 1920. The pond had been too small to show up on the smaller scale maps.

Many years ago (1980s) another farmer told me that he often used to plough up old bottles on one particular field - but the funny thing is he said - they are all in a straight narrow line down the field & I cant think why. I was a little mystified myself - until I looked on the old maps covering the area.
The Victorian map showed a drainage ditch that no longer existed - it had probably been a convenient place for the farm to dispose of its rubbish in the days before the council collection had started.

There will be thousands of similar sites like these throughout the country where many old bottles are still waiting to be found.
