Hi Rosie, There are good and bad Rally's just as there are good and badly organised rally events.
Charity rally's are mostly very well organised and run by various charitable organisations to secure funding for their respective charity/charities. Doing your research is key

SS47 is spot on (as always).
Some are very good, as examples the Anton Rally and the Rodney Cooke are two charity rallies that are always good. Both well organised, on undetected land (obviously finds can not be guaranteed), and raise money for good causes.
However, some "commercial rallies" are on land that has been detected previously (although I have heard of cases of "planting coins" they are VERY rare), so some might claim are mainly to raise money for the organisers. Obviously I will not name them (do your own research) ..... but even with these its a day out in the fresh air detecting with like minded people and NO land is ever covered 100% so good finds are still possible.
One advantage of a rally for a newbie is that it is a great way to pick up tips and get advice. Even if its a "bad" rally, this could be of great use on your own permissions in the future.
But do not ask a question just as the "starting gun" sounds

Hello, been going on for years Rosie, like said there are some good charity events but the big rallies you pay and take a chance like everyone else, it's good to meet up with other detectorists , metal detecting is getting more popular than ever so those without permission can fall into the bad rally syndrome ,

Yes and No
there is a long thread on here "the Good , bad and ugly" on here
But as a side note YouTube isnt a good place to learn about detecting or rallies. There's some right dodgy people about.
Its often as much about money as the rallies are.
I seen. planted finds, illegal detecting and fake testing / reviews. Even talking down perfectly Good organisations because they have there own agenda.
I have been on rallies where people have moaned and left early because they haven't found anything.
Could it be, they were walking in the wrong place or using there detector as a weed Wacker.
unfortunately since increase of popularity in Facebook there has been an increase in unscrupulous rally organisers. Often using words like undetected or Roman.
As said above you need to do some research. Also look at the history. I would be suspicious if it was always the same person who always found the gold noble, Saxon brooch on every rally.

That's a bit harsh, rallies not for me, but that's a personal and geographical choice, there looks to be some really good ones out there doing a fine job raising money for some very worthy causes, you maybe need to do some groundwork to seek out the genuine ones.Rosie wrote: Fri Jun 11, 2021 12:32 am This hobby seems to be going down the pan people know what’s happing and still protect the bad side of it
Detecting has unfortunately had some bad press lately, but as long as the majority of us continue to do things the right way, the hobby has a sound footing.
Maybe these maps and legends?

Some fantastic finds have been found on Rallies... yes some are profit and greed, but by no means all.Rosie wrote: Thu Jun 10, 2021 12:46 am Hi lam new to the hobby of metal detecting and want to go on a rallie .I have watched a few tutorials on utube and some of them are really bad .about land that has been done to death .yet they say it’s never been detected on .And some plant coins etc which are pure rubbish .it seems to me like a licence to print money so I think I will give that one a miss and stick to my own permissions

Lots of problems with rallies especially the pay to search events and they have attracted much criticism from the archaeological establishment who view them as an uncontrolled threat. Of course that is a one sided view as commercial archaeology these days is very adept at destroying the casual loss archaeological record on an industrial scale.
However there is a new kid or kids on the block called Just Detect Limited incorported in January this year. Lets see what stir this outfit causes.

Hi sorry about the late post but just finished work . Some great replies to my last post you probably have your own Stories to tell . Won’t be going to any of these so called rallies as ,some of you in me eyes just want a bit crack and a couple of pints . I can get that anywhere. I hate people playing on someone’s good nature metal detecting is big business at the moment .but full of people looking for that opportunity to screw us .iam totally new to this hobby and haven’t been or done anything but I can see the hobby is full of people out to lead us up the garden path take care rosie

As you say, there's nothing wrong with making metal detecting your living as long as the organisations you associate with carry out their activities in a responsible, professional manner and are properly registered businesses.
I am dubious of those 'businesses' who aren't actually businesses (or who might have been at one time but no longer are, yet continue to promote themselves as such). I'll stick to the charity rallies.
Phil
