does anyone know what this is.

and is there any test i can do to see if its gold.

Best bet is take it to a Jewellery shop and ask them to test it ;) If you want to do it yourself & dont mind rubbing it a little:
"Rub the piece of jewelry across a piece of unglazed porcelain tile. It should not make a black streak. If it does then it is pyrite.If the streak is golden yellow then it is gold. Unglazed porcelain tile can be found at a hardware store"

looks like the remnants of an old half penny coin, ravaged by the soil, coppered bronze

Gosh thats a rough un......doubt its gold otherwise it wouldnt be so degarded and would shine pretty well.....

You could soak it in olive oil for a week or 2, apparently that cleans them up quite good with zero damage....
