Newby on North Yorkshire Beaches

Post by Amg »

Hi All

Thanks for letting me on the forum.

Extremely new to this and hoping to do some detecting on the beach this weekend and do some learning. Thinking of going to Sandsend, Whitby, Scarborough or Bridlington.

What the general experience of these beaches, any gems in North Yorkshire/East Yorkshire to focus on? Are there better places on these beaches?

Looking forward to delving into the info on here.

Many thanks
Alastair

Some of the beaches in North Yorkshire are great places to detect. If you go onto the Crown Agents website and look at the Crown Agent foreshore, you will see all the beaches in the country that you can detect on that is Crown Land. You don't need a licence as you once did, but you need to make sure you know which bits you can detect and which you cannot
Anything coloured purple and you can detect away and it is only between mean high water and mean low water although with some beaches it's a tad difficult to determine this. North of Whitby to the golf course is off limits, but after that there's miles of beach to go at. South of Whitby is fine to as far as Ravenscar
This link will take you to the Crown foreshore map and you will see where you can go.

Just a bit of caution, there are some parts of the beaches there marked as SSSI, conservation areas etc that it says are no metal detecting. I know it may seem daft when kids can be there digging with bucket and spade etc.
There are also some advice in the beaches part of the forum :-
viewforum.php?f=332

have a look at the c=various Yorkshire posts in there.
The magic map page can help with SSSI's etc, although I find it difficult to understand at times.

Just because it is on the crown estate map does not mean it is OK.
Good hunting.

Being new to the hobby, please remember that the beaches in the area (particularly Scarborough) will be packed with sunbathing holiday makers in the upper reaches and swimmers, paddlers/kiddies in the lower reaches enjoying themselves. Responsible and considerate detecting requires that we restrict our beach searching to the early mornings or early evenings during the busy holiday periods when the beaches can be expected to be much quieter.
Most detectorists choose to avoid beach hunting altogether until the post/pre summer months.

Note: Filey beach/cliff (by the yacht club) is subject to dangerous land slip/falls.
This pic of the cliff was taken about 7 days below the Filey Yacht Club!
Stay Safe. Eric
