Askerswell Hoard - now on display at Dorset Museum

Post by ManOnTheMoon »

This morning I spotted an online mention of the Askerswell Hoard, and wondered if anyone near the south coast of England might be interested in seeing this hoard, part of which has very recently been put on display at the Dorset Museum in Dorchester.

Given the circumstances in which the hoard was found, I am surprised that my search of the MDF today has not produced any mention of this hoard!

"The hoard of Roman coins was found in the parish of Askerswell in West Dorset in 2017 during a metal detecting rally. A total of 627 silver denarius coins were recovered ..."

"The new showcase display, which runs from 4 August until 28 September 2023, allows visitors a first glance at some of the most important coins from the hoard, as well as an insight into the work going on behind the scenes to research, catalogue and eventually to display the whole hoard in the Museum’s People’s Dorset gallery."

The Dorset museum does a good value deal whereby an Unlimited Ticket allows multiple entries for a whole year. If the ticket is booked online there is 10% off the price:

This is the PAS entry for the hoard:

Just to be clear, I am not connected in any way with the hoard or the Dorset Museum, nor do I live close enough to Dorset to make a visit worthwhile! 😉 I merely thought the display might be of interest to MDF members.

You had me puzzled with the word "chored", Allectus! 😄

I have now found out, via urbandictionary.com, what it means:

"Colloquial British term for the act of stealing or having stolen an item of interest. The term depicts the action of theft used in informal conversation, typically amongst youths. Originating in Scottish high schools the term has widely become used throughout England and is now recognised in most of the United Kingdom however the word does not appear in the Oxford English Dictionary and would be considered 'slang terminology'."

Sadly, this illegal activity is now being uncovered as a 'popular pasttime' at all levels of the UK museum system. 😕

Entry fee to a Museum !!
Whaaat?

Haven’t been to ine for years but this is outrageous and stops millions of children from learning about the past - that is the cost of an entry fee and it’s dreadful
