Arrowhead from a forest
Found this iron arrowhead from a finnish forest some time ago. It unfortunately takes a couple of years to get the final evaluation from the museum authorities where I live, but the early estimate from the archeologist was around 1000 AD so that is viking age. Quite well preserved in sandy soil below the vegetation.

Two years before you get it back? I find that iron artefacts like this need preserving quickly after digging, or they degrade, fall apart, water mysteriously comes out of them etc.
But presumably you can't do any preservation before the archie's get it?

In Finland the law is that you have to (should) report all finds that are 100yrs or more. I think they are considering about increasing this because they are flooded with reports
Anyways the museum department then decides will they purchase the find or return it. Normally all finds pre 16th century are purchased.
Our historical periods somewhat differ from the UK’s periods:
-2000BCe to -500 BCE is bronze age
-500 BCE to 1200 AD is iron age. ( divided into different phases. Roman, merovingian, viking etc)
1200 AD to ~1550 is the medieval period. Since the northern crusades and christianity.
1550 forward are historical times.
