MDF Metal detecting & metal detectors resource: a friendly forum to discuss all your detecting needs and promoting responsible metal detecting for all.
I bought my legend around 5 weeks ago, and have been flicking between M1 and M3, (mainly M3) as I'm finding M2 is very chatty even when I turn down the sensitivity, I have factory reset and reinstalled 1:15 but it's still the same.
It seems everyone's saying they prefer M2 on forums and youtube vodeos I've watched... Is this normal?
Use which ever Multi gives you the stability you need for that particular site. This is primary. All 3 multis will give good overall performance, though each has it's own best application. Going to a single frequency is always an option but the Multis are normally a better choice overall.
If there was a 'best mode' then you have to question why there are more.
You have 3 modes depending on circumstance and what you want to preference.
The Manual states M1 is more sensitive to higher conductors (copper coins, silver) and M2 is more sensitive to lower conductors (Think roman coins, relics, bronze etc) and the smaller stuff. M3 is for saturated ground and has improved unmasking when dealing with foil/trash.
The legend puts out 5, 10, 15, 20 and 40 khz simultaneously at the same time, but the modes you select and settings you apply affect what the detector feeds this back to you.
M2, as you say, is often quoted as best for roman and smaller lower conductor targers for this reason as M2 is geared this way as described above... I often go over a site in M1 first to clean up the silvers and coppers, then drop it for M2 to unmask the bronze/smaller targets but they all will detect and would imagine most targets would be detected in all modes.

I also find M2 chatty though it's my preferred mode for finding hammered coins in dry conditions. Dropping the Sens and switching to the smaller coil helps. Counterintuitively, I find leaving the GB on the preset also helps quieten things down in M2 though I don't know why. Where I can, (i.e. when the soil is moist) I stick to M3. I find I can push the Sens up without the Legend becoming noisy and a "pumping GB" seems to maximise depth and sensitivity to small thin coins. I repeat GB and noise cancelling every 30 minutes or so or whenever chattering increases. I rarely experience EMI, but if I do and can't find a quiet SMF mode, I use 15KHz single frequency.
Previously, early 80s to early 90s top-end C-Scopes and Tesoros. Early 90s onwards, several Whites "big box" detectors including the wonderful V3i - which is much missed.
