American looking for a UK detecting buddy

Post by Russmadem »

Hi all,

I am from the US and will be coming to the UK soon. I would love to get out for a day or two of detecting but... I Have no Permissions to hunt any lands. Pre COVID I used to post on various detecting forums and received so many offers I couldn't begin to accept them all. I have been over many times and developed many friendships with the generous people who volunteered to let me tag along for the odd day or two. Unfortunately, my good UK friend that I have detected with for the last 15 years has pretty much given up the hobby - thus I am looking for anyone willing to meet up for a hunt. I have been told COVID really changed the detecting game as EVERYONE now seems to have a detector and getting permissions is extremely difficult. Anyway, if there is anyone willing to meet up and let me tag along I would be extremely thankful. If not, I completely understand. I am more than willing to pay for lunch or supper and a Pint afterwards! Cheers

Hi Finnbear I have detected several times not far from your area. Most of the time I have been out around Cheltenham and Tewkesbury but also a few other spots such as the Isle of Wight. I am not tied to any specific area and am open to driving to anywhere in the UK. There are so many areas I haven't seen that I would be happy to head in any direction.

I guess you have probably already done this but I was going to suggest you tap into Facebook and maybe you will get something there. I can PM you my club details (if allowed on here) no membership needed, good day out on land. I`m on the south coast and do the beaches from Brighton to Bournemouth, so possible we could put a day together on a beach depending on dates or I could give you some tips.......Good luck..... [81/]

There are quite a lot of pay per day dig groups around the UK on Facebook, maybe that would best fit your trip? [42/] [81/]

Hi Russmadem - jut a suggestion - it might help if you can say when you're visiting and whereabouts you plan to stay? OK you're happy to drive but do you have a base in mind, or are you looking for a host to accommodate you?

Hi Phil, You make good points. I haven't mentioned dates because I don't have my flights finalized. I have two date windows. Oct 23 - 28 and Nov 8 - 13, I was hoping to line up some detecting and then buy my airfare. I really don't want to lock in my dates by buying the plane tix and then not be able to go detecting.

I don't have a base in mind. I used to stay in Cheltenham when I came over but this trip I am open to being wherever the detecting opportunity is. I can move from one hotel to the next each night. And no, I am not looking for a host to stay with. I am already asking a lot just inquiring if someone will take me detecting.

Another new wrinkle, I thought I had a detector rental available to me when I come over but that has fell through so I am still looking for a detector to rent which is another obstacle.

You also have be be aware of the law regarding taking finds out of the country. You will need to apply for an export license for all finds over 50 years old and you will need to find someone who can submit the paperwork and then forward the items on to you when the license is received.

More information here:

f8met, Thanks for the info. I am aware of the broader guidelines of the law and the need for an export license but i have more I need to learn. I have a good friend in the UK who detected for many years and I believe I could get his help. I appreciate the links you sent, I will try and educate myself to a higher level before I head over.
