Coin ID Help

Post by What ho chap! »

I have come across a coin, it looks as if made of copper, but is very weathered. On one side is a head facing towards the right, and I can make out to the right of the head in capitals a "C" then a space, then an "A", the rest has been worn away but by the shape of the head it might have a small crown or a wreath.

On the reverse is a figure, as if viewed directly from the front, a staff or spear in the left hand and something else in the right hand, possibly hanging. There seems to also be a crescent shape at the feet of the figure.

Sorry I can't provide anything better (a picture) but I don't have a camera. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a printer with a scanner?
Although not ideal if you place the coin in the scanner you can sometimes get a reasonable result....

What is the diameter of the coin?

Bit of a long shot without a picture

but the reverse sounds like jupiter standing, and the AC could be part of a AVG

so i am going to punt, first guess at Marcus Aurelius Sestertius

totally depends on more info though, size, picture :)

Well, just because it sounds like one does not mean it is :)

get me pics, and I will give you a more informed answer

Then you can upload to ukdfd, it's worth it :)

Sorry but i'd rather spend my money on a metal detector of my own than a camera :P
This coin was actually found by my neighbour, I borrowed his detector for a bit (found nothing but an 1897 penny) and this was in the pile of things he has found.

Looking at it again the figure has S C either side of it.

e.g. S (figure) C

If you get what I mean. Also the figure looks nearly identical to the second one down on this:

Cool

there are about 4000 different roman coins, so without a pic, impossible to ID properly

bearing in mind that more than half the planet walks round with cameras in there pockets and making phone calls with them at the same time, you should find a teenager, they will probably take the picture and upload it to your computer before you can finish asking them.

It is more likey to be GENIO on the reverse then, and the coin could be a Follis under one of many rulers

scroll a few

cheers

Would have to look into it more but it looks like a coin Antonia, wife of Nero Claudius Drusus, grandmother of Caligula.

I think its "Diocletian" Jupiter standing left Globe / sceptre - eagle at foot with wreath in beak SC

Now you have mastered the camera thing, any chance of full on photos without glare, then we can upload it to UKDFD as well :)

You're spot on! Most teenagers I teach have at least three phones on different contracts and probably use them all at once!
