Hi Rab
Im a 1220xd fan,i use it alot and its a great machine,no question.
Personally i use the meter/audio disc and go off the signals as to which to dig.Basically the high pitch means non ferrous metal but can also do this when you pinpoint large iron objects so time and practise will enable you to distinguish the 2 apart.Iron grunts low on the audio but i would say if your new to it then dig it whatever signal and see what it is,that way you will learn the machines capability.
Slight raises in pitch are vital clues!!! the 1220 isnt known for massive depths and so if you hear the pitch raise even slightly DIG!! it could be a coin or similar quite deep and therefore the pitch doesnt squeal like it would at ground level so be alert or you could miss these finds and many others!
As said before im a huge fan of my 1220xd and my friend who detects with me also uses one and so weve both carefully mastered them and put them to good use.I own a newforce R1 too and so i have a choice, and the 1220xd comes with me on dry low grassed sites and i think it works brilliant in this condition.Wet grass or rough ground or even plough i choose my R1,but thats only my preference.
The 1220 is a tough machine to really master, but the rewards are endless once the audio signals become familiar, trust me.

Oh yeh and
Pull the sensitivity back to say 9 oclock,3/4 on the sens button, and obviously the discrim button doesnt function in meter/audio mode.
The reason i say go easy on the sens is that the 1220 seems to get over excited even when theres no target, seems to have its own loose compass somewhere!! lol but with time you'll know what i mean.
Close listening will bring lots of stuff to the surface and most of my best finds such as Rings, coins, amplula's,fibulas have all been found with the 1220.
Oh and ...good luck!!

No prob rab.
Post back and let me know what youve discovered in terms of performance.
My only criticism on the machine is that it falses in the wet quite alot,a few occasions ive almost given up a days detecting because it got so bad, maybe its just my machine?
As mentioned earlier, its my only choice for low dry pasture and if you hug the ground it will miss nothing.

I have a Grey CS1220XD would you really notice say Copper when you detect over it with a noticeable raised tone like you do a lower Iron target or do I need to really listen hard, I say this as my XD only sreamed with tin cans and surface Iron, a surface button only gave a mid growl but was a left ( red) meter reading.cheshirepaul
My units off to CS tomorrow I almost hope they tell me somthing is not right with it
