St Patrick Pendant?

Post by Adam_Hall »

Hi guys,

back to the farm today and unearthed this main part of the pendant, then on a strip a metre across recovered the broken off part. Now I can make out some writing on this, on one side it says..."Patrick Apostle of Ireland Prey For Us" and also says Rev. and something elseafter, perhaps a name. It also says to someone and from someone i think but writing very small. There is a picture on one side which i believe to be St Patrick and the other is a mother and child, perhaps jesus and mary?

Anyone able to shed any further light?

Here are the other finds from today...

What looks to be a toy cannon wheel, a very worn and damaged ( double bent ) George VI (perhaps) coin, 2 x Victoria half pennies, 1861 & 1890, Edward penny, 2 decorative buttons, the cross pendant as above and a enamel brooch of some kind.
Cheers

I remember losing that!! I sincerely hope it says PRAY and not PREY. Some nice finds, St Patrick is a common figurine on Roman Catholic medals and this looks like a souvenir from a pilgrimage, Liam

The wheel looks to be a part of a model steam engine.

So here is some information i have found, the pendant reads on one side " ST PATRICK APOSTLE OF IRELAND PRAY FOR US" With a harp to the right, monastic building to the left and an animal to the bottom. On the obverse it says "THE CATHOLIC TOTAL ABSTINENCE LEAGUE" under this it says " Rev. JAS NUGENT"

Having identified this name, I have found that a James Nugent was part of ST Nicholas Abbey, and he set up the Cross Abstinence League on 1872, i believe the date of this piece to be later at the turn of the century, 1900. This was 5 years before his death.

I am of the opinion that this would not have belonged to the reverend himself, but his name is on this piece in recognition of what he did. Apparently a very highly respected cleric, and as such the Nugent Care organisation was setup in honour to carry on his work.

I believe that this would have belonged to a farm worker who was a devout Catholic, and would have perhaps made the journey to Ireland or Liverpool to attend or support the work of Rev James Nugent.

Though will be recording this with the PAS, and seeing if can gleam any more knowledge on this piece.
Cheers

Good detective work and an excellent example of how metal detecting widens our interest in history. If all the kids at school struggling through history were given a chance to see the great finds that forum members unearth, they would see a new exciting aspect of our rich past, Liam
