Beaches of Norfolk

Post by cjscat »

Spent time today looking at the crown Estate map for East Anglia.
I can't make out if Winterton-on-sea is highlighted or not and am interested in this area. Great Yarmouth is highlighted with luck it will be searchable with the C.Estate permit.
As I have said before it is always tricky as Wells next the sea looks to be a large C.Estate beach to search when consulting the map online,yet it is owned by Holkham Estate and detecting is prohibited.
Just makes me paronoid to trust the map.
Can anyone let me know of Norfolk beaches they know to be ok.
Im looking to stay in either:Winterton
Cromer
Walcott nr Walsham
Garleston=on-sea
Thornam nrBrancaster

I have just heard back from two cottages we are interested in.
I had enquired if the owners knew of the beach ownership the Cromer one feels sure that at least part of the beach allows us on.
The Winterton on sea response was that she cannot say. Thinks it may be a case of Crown estate yet classed as private as the dunes may be protected.
Thanks for the freedom of info link, I had seen it as Ive spent all day trying to find out conclusively.
Seems even the tourist information folk dont know 100%. so frustrating.

I think you are OK on the actual beach at Winterton there is a section of dunes etc on the right hand side as you aproach the beach that is designated sssi there are some old bunkers there. pretty sure most of the beaches from Sherringham around to Gt Yarmouth are Crown Estate except Walcot I assume this comes under council ownership/control, don't think there are any restrictions as I have often seen detecting going on there. If you are unsure it's best to email crown estates and they can email you a more detailed map of the particular area you are interested in and /or let you know if they lease out that area, as has been said Wells,Holkham are definate no go area's,
