Medieval Seal Matrix c/w Roman Intaglio

Post by LuckE »

Okay, Okay! I can't keep this to myself any longer..
I had a nice find a few weeks ago and thought I would share it with you all first.
I hoovered up a beautiful 13th Century silver personal seal matrix that belonged to a rather wealthy chap. Its a bit special because it has a Roman intaglio set in the centre.

The inscription reads:

SIGILL:ALANI:DE:DVNTVNE

Sign (or seal) Alan of Dutton (or Dunton)

It's making its way through the treasure process as we speak!

Clive.

The seal matrix is silver and 13th Century.

All finders of gold and silver objects over 300 years old have a legal obligation to report such items under the Treasure Act 1996.

This is something that we should ALL be aware of!

I love this and a great impression too the first pic looked like the itaglio had been chipped beyond recognition (wheres the number to specsavers). Funily enough in a good few decades of detecting I have never found one myself came closest when someone detecting at right angles stopped on my line 2 metres away and dug one up (wanted to kill him) then to add to this he went on to find the best Gold Stater I have seen same field. Mind I supose I did not do too badly as my Norman Swivel came from same field just an hour earlier.

Great find well saved
