I know there is a victorian dump within a mile of me, but i only know the rough location ... Although i was told not to tell anyone - i'll let some info slip tho ... it is in Stoke Gabriel at the side of a small lane ::g (thats about all i know too haha) :))
Near the quarry somewhere i think 8-}

Kim - the problem with any bottle dump that you get from others is that it's either going to be too late to be of much interest or it's going to be well hammered and not much left.

Your best bet is to do the research and find an undug one for yourself. It's not that difficult. Get onto the old maps site http://www.old-maps.co.uk and choose a likely area. Compare maps of different ages, together with a modern OS map (use Bing in another tab) and satellite images, & look for any likely sites that may have been filled in with rubbish.

Things like old quarries, sand pits, ponds, woods, marshy areas, brick works, etc. Also note things like small changes to field boundaries, changes to streams & rivers, old tracks that go nowhere, etc. Mark all possible sites of interest on an OS map & then spend a day checking every one out for signs on the ground - signs of ash & broken crockery, elders, nettles, etc. Use a probe rod if you have one to locate ash in the ground - crunchy deposits.

I spent a day doing this recently, checking out about 15 possible sites and found three undug dumps. Only fairly small, two farm dumps and a manor house dump, but good all the same ::g

Best place to look for a buddy is in the Finding A Buddy section, scroll down on the left hand menu. You have asked about bottle digging and have received some good replies, Liam ;)

Good luck with your tip digging Kim,

I too have got into this, found a few tips in Somerset, (north Somerset)
Found a tip from about 1915, small but some nice stuff coming out, its a refreshing change from
WW2 sites which is all I have done in the past 25 years.
I now am keen to find old Railway dumps from the old GWR days, (they had to dump rubbish too,)

Instead of old plane bits, I now dream of finding Enamel signs, and Bottles pot lids etc, I love tip digging , as they are real time capsules from there day,

I would like to find some just a few buddies myself, just a few, who live near me, (weston Super mare) who are keen to hunt down Industrial /Domestic archaeology, from cars planes to bottles, anything of local interest... I suppose I just cant help myself allways searching for that next find.. I guess your all the same.. cant beat the buzz of finding something old from a bygone age ::g :D

We'd all like to find a GWR railway dump - the prices GWR stuff fetches. A GWR codd bottle can fetch £250 and as for a ginger beer ..... =))
