sweet spot on the beach

Post by onlyonegazza »

i went out detecting today on a place i hadn't tried on my local beach, it looked terible, rocks, stones, hard digging. anyway not a lot of signals so i ventured into a piece with football sized rocks on sand, my first signal, silver ring yeeeeeh, then loads of fishings weights.
the interesting thing though, when digging i noticed that around 7 inches down there is a black sand layer so hard you can hardly dig through it. all the finds had sunk through the sand and were found on this, i could push my hand down through the soft sand and feel the layer below. this place is going to be productive i'm possitive, maybee my first gold, i only seem to find silver rings, so we will see.
goes to show don't judge a beach by how it looks ::g

cheers fellas, i havn't taken any photo's yet, i'll post as soon as can tomorrow. the finds ain't that special but a finds a find and it keeps me happy :)
for some reason gold is eluding me, iv'e found quite a few silvers but not a single bit of gold, maybee i just aint walked over it :-/
i only found the spot at the end of the day, so i'll try and get back there this weekend and have another longer search.
the sand was so soft underneath the rocks, every time i took a scoop out it filled right back in and i had to use the pinpointer and feel around with my hand.
it's hard to believe, but when my hand went down onto the hardpack it was as flat as a pooltable underneath!
the old minelab sovreign worked well as usual.

the black sand layers are made up from rotted sand.if a rock that is covered in sea weed is turned over, and not put back, the weed attached to the rock dies and rotts underneath.so if you dig round a rock you often dig smelly black sand.
this also can happens on beaches when a storm had washed up lots of weed, and the weed is not cleared up.thats why you see tractors clearing beaches of it, on popular holiday beaches.

i hope this works, it's a computer sais no day ;)
the top is what i found on the sweet spot that day.
the middle is the total over the last few trips, £22 a silver ring, silver spoon and some other bits and bobs, plus the dreaded trash!
the bottom should be bits of shell, fishing weights, and various stuff inc buttons and god knows what.
i think iv'e got there in the end and thanks to all for the advice. :)

You appear to have a few chunks of artillery shell and possibly some grenade nuts but I can't see them properly. You also look like you might have the tops from American 60mm mortar rounds.

Don't worry, everything appears quite safe, but I would like to see pictures of the round chunky bits and bits that look like parts of cones.
